Brendan Buckley Joins Eagles As Assistant Coach

The former BC captain returns to the Heights.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College alumnus Brendan Buckley has been named an assistant coach on the men's ice hockey staff, it was announced Wednesday by head coach Jerry York.
Buckley played for the Eagles from 1995-1999, serving as a captain in his senior season, before going on to enjoy a 12-year professional playing career. Buckley's most recent coaching experience came at Connecticut, where he served as an assistant coach for the past three seasons. With the Huskies, he focused on recruiting and coaching the defensemen on the ice.

"I am excited to bring back to campus a member of my first Boston College recruiting class and captain of the 1998-99 Eagles," said York. "Brendan will bring to our locker room the same energy, tenacity, and passion that he showed on the ice as a player at BC, in his pro career, and as an assistant coach under Mike Cavanaugh."

As a student-athlete, Buckley was a standout defenseman for the Eagles after coming in as part of the first class recruited by York. He was named assistant captain in 1998 before donning the "C" for the Eagles in 1999. Buckley played 158 career games as an Eagle, helping the program to back-to-back Hockey East tiles and Frozen Four appearances in 1998 and 1999.

"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to come back home and rejoin the BC hockey family," said Buckley. "Being able to play for Coach York and now work alongside him and the staff is a dream come true. Some of my best memories playing hockey came at the Heights and I can't wait to help develop our student-athletes to help them achieve their goals on and off the ice."

Buckley, who was selected by the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in the fifth round of the 1996 NHL Entry Draft, enjoyed a professional playing career spanned over 550 games in the American Hockey League (AHL) and in Europe. A tremendous leader on and off the ice, Buckley served as a captain or assistant captain for four different organizations. He spent four seasons with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, where he was named the 2003 Defenseman of the Year. After retiring from professional hockey in 2011, Buckley joined Buckley Sports Management where he served as Vice President and Director of Recruiting before joining Cavanaugh's staff in July 2015.

Buckley graduated from the Carroll School of Management in 1999.
