Apuzzo Named Attacker Of The Year
Chestnut Hill, Mass. – Three members of the second-seed Boston College lacrosse program landed a number of key Atlantic Coast Conference awards on Tuesday.Â
Â
Junior Sam Apuzzo was named the ACC Attacker of the Year and junior Elizabeth Miller picked up ACC Defensive Player of the Year. Head coach Acacia Walker-Weinstein was selected as the ACC Coach of the Year.
Â
The Eagles (19-1) finished the regular season at 17-0, won the ACC regular-season title and advanced to the finals of the ACC championship.
Apuzzo, who was named to the All-ACC First Team, led all conference players in points (34) and points per game (4.86) during the regular season. She earned a league-leading four ACC Offensive Player of the Week awards, the last two in the regular season. Apuzzo helped the Eagles advance to the finals of the ACC Championship with 11 goals and two assists over the three games in tournament play. She leads the conference and is No. 2 in the nation in goals scored (79) and points (112). She also has 33 assists.Â
Miller, another first-team selection by the ACC, is one of the Eagles top defenders on a team that has allowed a league-low 71 goals in seven ACC games. She is a mainstay on a defense that held 10 teams to nine goals or less. In the ACC Tournament, the Eagles held Louisville to just six goals and No. 23 Notre Dame to just seven. Miller has played in every game and has tallied a career-high six goals, to go along with 28 grounds balls and 35 draw controls. She earned ACC Defensive Player of the Week Award once this season.
Â
Walker-Weinstein is coaching her sixth season at BC. She is currently 88-35 at the helm of the lacrosse program at The Heights. This season, Walker-Weinstein's team set a new single-season program record for most wins (19), won the ACC regular-season title and completed the regular season with a perfect record of 17-0.
Â
The Eagles currently lead in the ACC in nine categories and outscored conference opponents, 104-71. BC scored 319 goals this season, second all-time in program history.
Â
Walker-Weinstein's defense is also strong as the team yields just 9.10 goals per game and has held 10 teams to single-digits goals scored.
Â
Boston College is 19-1 and awaits the NCAA Tournament Selection Show, which will air Sunday at 9:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.
