Eagles Edged in Double Overtime at Syracuse
October 05, 2018 | Field Hockey
A goal from Frederique Haverhals forced double overtime but the Eagles fell short on the road
SYRACUSE, N.Y. --Â The No. 8 Boston College field hockey team (7-4, 2-2 ACC) saw their first overtime contest since early September, but fell, 2-1, to conference foe No. 13 Syracuse (7-4, 1-3 ACC) after the Orange capitalized on a penalty corner just three minutes into the second overtime frame.
As the opening half of the contest went scoreless, the Eagles held a 6-2 shot advantage over the Orange. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Dwyer did not see a shot until the 26th minute of the match, but her kick-save on a shot from Syracuse's Tess Queen kept the scoreboard blank. The Eagles pulled the only penalty corner of the first half, but the shot from senior captain Frederique Haverhals was saved by Syracuse goalkeeper Borg van der Velde.
Â
The Eagles' first half shots were the work of sophomore Elizabeth Warner with two and graduate student Brooke Matherson and seniors Carly Kauffman and Haverhals each recording one shot.
Â
While the second half had a slow opening, the pace changed after a 45th minute time-out by Syracuse. The Orange hopped on the board first with a goal from Claire Cooke just two minutes after the time-out. Kauffman had a strong counteract, recording a shot in the 48th minute.
Â
The Eagles earned three more corners over the second half but the first two were blocked. Boston College finally capitalized on their fourth chance of the night-- Haverhals secured the goal off of the corner with an assist from sophomore Cassidy Atchison.
Â
The Orange pulled three penalty corners to answer the Boston College goal, but remained unsuccessful as the game remained tied at 1-1 to end regulation.
Â
The first overtime period was highlighted by two consecutive corner chances for the Eagles, but neither were successful. After a series of back-and-forth action down the field and strong defensive efforts from both sides, the first overtime period saw no change in score and forced a second.
Â
The Orange secured a penalty corner in the third minute of the second overtime frame. Roos Weers secured Syracuse's first ACC win with her sixth goal of the season off of the corner.
