Forced Fourth Set Not Enough for Eagles

Errors hurt Eagles in 3-1 loss to Syracuse
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Despite forcing the match into a fourth set, the Boston College volleyball team was unable to come back from a 2-0 deficit, falling to Syracuse on Wednesday evening, 24-26, 21-25, 25-22, 13-25.
The Eagles (13-12, 3-10 ACC) hit at a .149 clip (55 kills – 32 errors – 154 total attempts) and out dug the Orange 57-55, but were beat at the net as Syracuse (14-7, 10-3 ACC) tallied 15 blocks to BC's five. The Orange attacked at a .333 average (59 – 14 – 135) on the night.
Freshman Jewel Strawberry led BC with 17 kills in the loss, a career-best mark, while senior McKenna Goss followed with 12 kills. Junior Jane DeJarld led all players with 33 assists, a season-high.
Sophomore Clare Naughton's 12 digs led BC while junior Jill Strockis recorded 10 digs and both of the Eagles' service aces. Sophomore Amaka Chukwujekwu led the Eagles with four total blocks.

BC HIGHLIGHTS
- The Eagles' 55 kills were the seventh-most in a match this year and the fifth-most against an ACC opponent.
- BC committed just two service errors to the Oranges' five.
- The Eagles' most efficient set was the first as BC recorded 16 kills and just six errors on 26 attempts (.278).
- Jewel Strawberry hit a career-high 17 kills on the night, four more than her previous best.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – The teams opened the contest trading points, with BC trailing 9-8, until the Eagles hit four straight kills to lead, 11-9. Syracuse went on a 6-3 surge to take a 15-14 advantage, but the teams stayed virtually deadlocked through 18 all. The Eagles took a timeout when Syracuse grabbed a 20-18 lead, a two-point gap that held as the teams split the next six for Syracuse to lead, 22-21. BC forced an Orange regroup, tying the frame at 23-23 on two Syracuse errors. A Syracuse kill put the Orange up 24-23 and drew a BC timeout, but 'Cuse went 2-1 to finish the set in extra points, 26-24.
Set 2 – The Orange and Eagles went back and forth with short runs and neither squad leading by more than two points, through 6-6. Syracuse then took three straight to lead 9-6 before the teams split the next 16 evenly, making the score 17-14 Syracuse. The Eagles took back four of seven points, trailing 20-17 at the Orange timeout. Syracuse went 3-1 from the regroup, leading 22-18 and forcing an Eagles' break. BC held off two set points with back-to-back kills from McKenna Goss and Jewel Strawberry, but the Orange clinched the frame, 25-21.
Set 3 – The Eagles mounted a comeback in the third frame, taking a 25-22 victory from the Orange. BC started down, 4-2, but went on an 8-1 tear to lead 10-5. The Orange closed the gap on a 4-1 run, trailing 11-9, before going 6-4 to knot it at 15 all, drawing a BC timeout. Syracuse edged BC 3-2 to lead 18-17 before the teams went 4-4, with the Orange leading at the BC timeout, 22-21. BC scored three straight out of the break to take set point, 24-22 and sent Syracuse to the bench, but took the final point of the frame on a kill from Goss.
Set 4 – Syracuse ran to a 4-0 lead in the final set, but BC quickly came back within one, 4-3. The Orange narrowly edged BC 5-4 over the next nine, leading 9-7, before notching six unanswered points to open up the set, 15-7. The Eagles gained a little ground on the Orange but called a timeout when Syracuse took a 20-11 advantage. BC won the first point out of the break, but the Orange took the set and match by a score of 25-13 on a 5-1 streak.
