Eagles Fall in Weekend Finale to Notre Dame

Irish record 20.5 blocks in 3-1 contest
NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Boston College volleyball team took an early lead, but eventually fell in four sets, 25-16, 8-25, 18-25, 20-25, to Notre Dame on Sunday afternoon at Purcell Pavilion.

Errors hurt the Eagles (13-11, 3-9 ACC), who hit at a season-low .033 clip on the day (40 kills – 35 errors – 150 total attempts). Notre Dame (14-8, 8-4 ACC) attacked at a modest .166 percent (42 – 18 – 145) but recorded 20.5 team blocks to the Eagles' five.

Junior Cat Balido led BC in kills with 12 while junior Jane DeJarld recorded a team-high 23 assists and both of BC's service aces.

Junior Jill Strockis had 23 digs to lead the Eagles' defense, followed by freshman Jewel Strawberry and junior Makenzie Morrison with 15 and 11 digs, respectively. Balido and sophomore Amaka Chukwujekwu each tallied two block assists to lead BC.

- Cat Balido led BC in kills for the second time this weekend with 12. The junior had 13 kills against Louisville on Friday night.
- BC out dug the Irish 76-64 on the day. The Eagles' 76 digs matches the team season-high and is the most digs in a four-set match this year.
- After recording two aces against Notre Dame, Jane DeJarld is tied for the team lead with 19 aces on the year. Sophomore Madison McKnight also has 19 aces this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to Clare Naughton tallying two kills and a block, holding a narrow 8-6 lead as the Irish edged BC 6-5 over the next 11 points. BC went on a 4-2 run, leading 12-8 at the first Irish timeout. The Eagles later called a timeout with a 15-10 advantage, going 3-1 out of the break to widen the lead to seven points, 18-11. The Irish rebounded with a 3-2 run, trailing 20-14, but a 5-2 surge sealed the 25-16 win for the Eagles.

Set 2 – Notre Dame took an early 4-1 lead to send BC into a timeout, hitting a 6-2 surge out of the break to lead 10-3. BC went on a 5-2 run to cut the lead to 12-8, but the Irish took off with 13 unanswered points to win the second set, 25-8.

Set 3 – Boston College rebounded from a 10-point deficit in the third frame, but the Irish claimed the set with a 25-18 win. Notre Dame took momentum into the third frame, starting with a 5-0 run and extending the lead to 12-2 at the Eagles' timeout. BC went 6-2 out of the break, trailing 14-8, before the Irish went 5-2 to regain a 10-points (19-9) advantage. The Eagles won four straight to force the Irish into a timeout, trailing 19-13, but the Irish edges BC 6-5 to finish the frame.

Set 4 – BC again came from behind to put a scare into the Irish late in the frame, but Notre Dame held on to take the match in four sets. The Eagles used the first timeout as the Irish jumped to a 6-3 advantage to begin the fourth set. The teams split the next six evenly (9-6 Notre Dame) before the Irish edged BC 4-2 to lead 13-8. Boston College took five of the next eight to come within striking distance, 16-13, but the Irish pulled back away with a 3-1 run to lead 19-14 at the BC timeout. The Eagles went on a 6-3 tear to come within two, 22-20, but the Irish took the final three points to win, 25-20.
