Eagles Drop Four-Set Contest to No. 22 Cardinals

Balido leads Eagles in 3-1 loss to Louisville
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Boston College volleyball team stole the first set from No. 22 Louisville but fell in four frames to the Cardinals, 25-18, 20-25, 17-25, 23-25, on Friday night at Cardinal Arena.

The Eagles (13-10, 3-8 ACC) hit at a .270 clip (54 kills – 16 errors – 141 total attempts) but were out blocked by a narrow 8-7 margin by the Cardinals (17-5, 10-1 ACC). Louisville attacked at a .284 rate (64 – 22 – 148) and tallied four aces to the Eagles' three.

Junior Cat Balido led the Eagles with 13 kills while sophomore Clare Naughton and freshman Jewel Strawberry each recorded 12 kills. Junior Jane DeJarld and sophomore Madison McKnight each tallied 21 assists.

Junior Jill Strockis had a team-high 12 digs while DeJarld recorded 11 for her third double-double this year. Sophomore Amaka Chukwujekwu led all players with her six total blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – Starting the set tied, 5-5, through ten points, BC opened up a 12-7 lead on the Cardinals and widened the gap to 15-9 at the media timeout. After trading points, BC held a 22-14 lead when Louisville went on a 4-1 run to force a BC timeout at 23-18. The Eagles held tight to the set, claiming a win with the final two points of the frame, 25-18.

Set 2 – The teams traded short runs to begin the second, tied all the way through 11 all. Louisville went on a 3-1 run to lead 14-12, but BC rebounded with a three-point run of its own to take a 15-14 advantage. The teams battled again through a 19-19 tie before Louisville hit a 6-1 surge to close out the second set, 25-20.

Set 3 – The Cardinals took the momentum into the third, taking a 25-17 win and a 2-1 lead in the match. Louisville pulled away early to a 4-1 advantage, later forcing an Eagles' break with a 10-4 lead. The Eagles came out of the timeout hot, pulling within two (14-12) on an 8-4 run to force the Cards to their bench. BC edged Louisville 5-4 over the next nine, trailing 18-17, but the Cardinals took the final seven points unanswered to claim the frame.

Set 4 – BC started the fourth on a 5-0 tear, keeping a grasp on the five-point margin later at 10-5. The Cardinals went 6-1 to knot the set at 11 apiece and force a BC timeout before the teams split the next eight points evenly to remain tied at 15-15. BC went 4-2 to lead, 19-17, but the Cardinals again used a late 8-4 surge to best the Eagles, 25-23.

The Eagles travel to Notre Dame, facing the Irish in a 1 p.m. match on Sunday, Oct. 28. The match will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
