Eagles Wrap Up 2018 Home Meets With Sweep of Northeastern and Maine

20 first-place finishes secure overall win
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College swim and dive team concluded their home meets of 2018 with a complete sweep of Northeastern and Maine over the weekend. The men's team topped Maine, 219-67, while the women bested Northeastern 168.5-131.5 and Maine 222-78.
Highlighting the meet for the Eagles was first-place finishes in 20 events over both the men's and women's teams.
The team of Maura Grimes, Taylor Covington, Victoria Lin and Haley Dolan grabbed the top spot in the women's 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:46.07. On the men's side, the team of Colin O'Leary, Taylor Cortens, Colin Derdeyn and Kevin Chandra earned first place in the same event with a time of 1:34.83.
Matthew Amedeo and Will Suchy earned first and second, respectively, in the men's 1000-yard freestyle with times of 10:07.87 and 10:11.43. Tyler Gruwell finished first in the 200-yard freestyle with a final time of 1:46.83.
Maura Grimes earned first with a time of 57.72 in the 100-yard backstroke while Eagles swept the top four spots in the same event for the men's team: Colin O'Leary (53.15), Michael Hinton (53.52), Alex Shehab (53.93) and Connor Futch (54.26). Taylor Cortens (58.73) and Peter Shepanzyk (1:01.99) took first and second in the men's 100-yard breaststroke.
Victoria Lin earned first in the women's 200-yard butterfly with a final time of 2:07.39. On the men's side, Cole Gvozdas (1:57.53), Matthew DeNave (2:00.80), Arthur Hidalgo (2:02.49) and Zachary Maher (2:02.74) placed in the top four spots.
Eagles also took the top four spots in the men's 50-yard freestyle, with Michael Spence placing first (21.64), Damion Ribeiro second (21.75), Colin Derdeyn third (22.15) and Max Threlkeld fourth (22.40).
Both teams placed first in the 3-meter dive: Ellie Uhl earned 262.90 points and Robert McCrory earned 256.60. Gabriella Taghian (236.10) and Cecilia O'Reilly (234.25) earned second and third for the women's team. Robert McCrory also placed first in the men's 1-meter dive with a score of 279.05.
Paul Boyce placed first in the men's 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.55. Four Eagles took the top finishes in the men's 200-yard backstroke, as well: Connor Futch (1:56.92), Alex Shehab (1:58.95), Brendan Gatward (2:00.27) and Talmage Corey (2:01.97).
For the 200-yard breaststroke, Alexa Lantin (2:24.08) and Peter Shepanzyk (2:11.92) both recorded first-place times.
Jack Fenton (4:53.51), Arthur Hidalgo (4.54.57), Denis Reznik (4:56.54) and Griffin Taylor (5:02.32) placed in the top four spots for the men's 500-yard freestyle event.
Through both teams, the Eagles took five of the six top-three spots: Victoria Lin (56.94) and Ina Elcott (58.43) placed first and second for the women, while Taylor Cortens (51.92), Colin O'Leary (52.60) and Tyler Gruwell (52.97) placed first through third for the men's team.
Alexa Lantin earned first place in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:11.86 while Ryan Price finished first in the same even for the men's team with a time of 1:59.28.
Up next, the Eagles travel to Miami on November 2. Over the weekend, they will compete against the Miami women's team, Florida Atlantic University and the Princeton men's team.
