Eagles Sweep for First-Ever Win Over North Carolina

BC earns dominant home victory over Tar Heels
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College volleyball team returned to the court on Sunday afternoon on a mission, defeating North Carolina for the first time in program history with a 27-25, 25-12, 25-19 sweep of the Tar Heels in Power Gym.
The Eagles (13-9, 3-7 ACC) never hit below .306 percent in any of the three sets, attacking at a .365 clip (49 kills – 12 errors – 104 attempts) through the match. The Tar Heels (5-14, 1-9 ACC) narrowly out blocked the Eagles, 6-5, but only hit for .223 percent (39 – 16 – 103) in the loss.
Freshman Jewel Strawberry led the Eagles with 14 kills, matching her career-high mark for the third time this season. Sophomore Clare Naughton was right behind with 13 kills, committing just one error on her 23 attempts for a .522 clip. Naughton also notched her second-consecutive double-double with 10 digs.
Junior Jane DeJarld led BC with 21 assists while junior Jill Strockis had 11 digs to lead the match. Senior McKenna Goss and junior Sophie West each notched two blocks for BC to share the team lead.

BC HIGHLIGHTS
- The Eagles hit at a .356 clip, the third-best this season and the highest for BC in ACC action.
- North Carolina did not record a single ace against the Eagles, while BC aced the Tar Heels four times.
- Clare Naughton recorded her second-consecutive double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs … it is her third double-double this season.
- Junior Cat Balido's first kill of the afternoon, which came midway through the first set, was her 200th on the season. Balido had six kills on the day and leads BC with 205 kills this year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – The first set was anyone's game, going into extra points after the teams battled through 10 tie points, through 25-25. The Tar Heels opened up an early 8-4 lead on BC, but the Eagles scored six in a row to lead, 10-8. The teams went point-for-point over the next 14, until UNC took two-straight to tie the set at 17 all and draw a BC timeout. The Eagles would call another regroup at 23-23 after the team split the next 12 points, 6-6. UNC grabbed set-point out of the break, 24-23, but the Eagles came back with two consecutive kills from freshman Jewel Strawberry to lead 25-24, forcing the Tar Heels to their bench. Attack errors for each side made the score 26-25, but a final kill from Strawberry sealed the set win for BC, 27-25.
Set 2 – The middle frame was all Boston College, as the Eagles cruised to a 25-12 victory after outhitting the Tar Heels .429 to .074 percent. BC jumped out to an 8-5 advantage, forcing UNC into a timeout, then went on a 9-4 run to lead 17-9 at the next North Carolina regroup. BC went 4-1 out of the break before surging to a 25-12 victory on a 5-2 run.
Set 3 – BC started out the third set with momentum, leading 8-3, and held that five-point advantage into the first UNC timeout, 11-6. The Tar Heels made a comeback out of the break, going 6-3 to trail just 14-12 and drawing an Eagles' timeout. BC won the next three in a row on a UNC error and a pair of aces from Clare Naughton, holding a 17-12 lead at the Tar Heels' break. BC went 6-3 to lead 23-15 before UNC tried for a late rally with three-straight points. BC closed out the set and match with kills from Sophie West and Clare Naughton, 25-19.

"It feels really good, I think we needed it for our team morale. The energy was there, the competitive spirit was there. I think everyone is feeling good, everybody worked hard and we came out with a win so everyone is happy.
"We've always looked at them (UNC) as a big rival for whatever reason, so coming out and sweeping them felt really good. I know it was a team effort and everyone put in their 100 percent."

The Eagles hit the road next, traveling to Louisville on Friday, Oct. 26 for a 7 p.m. match before facing off with Notre Dame at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28. Both matches will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
