No. 3 North Carolina Halts Eagles Unbeaten Streak

No. 11 Boston College falls to No. 3 UNC, 1-0, on the road
CARY, N.C. - In a showdown of two of the top teams in the ACC, No. 11 Boston College fell to No. 3 North Carolina, 1-0, at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina on Thursday afternoon.
The Eagles entered the game tied in second place with Duke with a 5-1-1 record and 16 points. A win would have cut into the UNC lead. The loss helped the Tar Heels improved to 8-0-0 with 24 points in the conference. Following today's loss, Boston College will play at No. 10 Duke on Sunday at Durham. That game will be at 1 p.m. on ESPNU.

BC HIGHLIGHTS
- The Eagles offense was led by sophomore Sam Coffey and junior Olivia Vaughn with four shots apiece.
- Graduate senior Alexis Bryant had four saves in the match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- North Carolina took advantage of an early mistake. After earning a goalkick, BC goalkeeper Alexis Bryant went to clear the ball. UNC's Alessia Russo was the recipient of a bad clear and she went one-on-one with Bryant. Russo put the Tar Heels ahead with her sixth goal of the season just five minutes into action.
- Following the Tar Heels goal, Boston College countered by earning a corner kick. The UNC defense cleared the ball but the Eagles continued to pressure Tar Heels. A flurry from Coffey and Vaughn, almost tied the match. Coffey had a shot high in the 17th minute followed by a shot from Vaughn from left to right that hit the crossbar. Her second shot seconds later was blocked by a defender.
- At the half, Boston College had six shots to eight from North Carolina. The Tar Heels held a 4-1 edge on corner kicks.
- The second half, Bryant opened with a solid save on a shot from Alessia Russo. The teams had a number of chances but both defenses shined in the match.
- One of the BC's best chances came in the final minute off a corner kick from Sam Coffey. After UNC cleared the ball, Kayla Duran won the ball and her shot form 25 yards out just sailed high over the cross bar.

- Prior to the loss, BC had a four-game unbeaten streak. The Eagles defeated Clemson, Virginia Tech, NC State, and tied Miami to go 3-0-1.
