Eagles Come Up Short in Weekend Finale

BC drops three-set home match to Miami
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College volleyball team fell to Miami, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon in Power Gym, just the second home loss all season for the Eagles.
Boston College (12-8, 2-6 ACC) narrowly out dug the Hurricanes, 53-50, and recorded six team blocks, but hit just .157 percent (38 kills – 19 errors – 121 total attempts) in the match. Miami (10-5, 6-2 ACC) hit at a .214 clip (41 – 16 – 117) and aced the Eagles six times while recording nine team blocks.
Sophomore Clare Naughton led BC with 10 kills, adding two aces and six digs on the day. Junior Jane DeJarld led the team with 16 assists while sophomore Madison McKnight added 13 of her own.
Junior libero Jill Strockis had a match-high 26 digs. Sophomore Ally Mullen led BC with three blocks while junior Carly Kutchke recorded two solo stuffs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – BC had its best set of the afternoon in the first frame, hitting at a .216 clip and committing just five attacking errors. The Eagles ran out to a 6-1 lead, sending the Hurricanes to the bench for a reset. Miami came out swinging after the break, winning four-straight points to come within one (6-5 BC) before splitting the next ten evenly with the Eagles. BC took a timeout with the 11-10 lead, but Miami stayed hot to win five of the next seven to lead 15-13. Boston College used another regroup before going 7-2 to regain the lead, 20-17, and draw a Miami timeout. The Hurricanes ultimately bounced back with a 5-1 surge, leading 22-21, before finishing the set on a 3-2 run to win 25-23.
Set 2 – BC started the second match with a 3-0 advantage, but a 5-2 run by the Hurricanes knotted the set at five apiece. The teams traded the next four points (7-7) before Miami doubled up on BC, 8-4, to take a 15-11 lead. BC came back with a 4-3 edge to get within striking distance, 18-15, then called a timeout. The Eagles went 7-5 out of the break, winning four points on Miami errors, and cut the lead to one, 23-22. Miami won the next point, forcing BC to use a timeout with the set-point looming. Junior Cat Balido came out of the timeout swinging, notching back-to-back kills to hold off the Hurricanes and tie the frame at 24 all. Miami came back with two points of its own, sneaking out a 26-24 win.
Set 3 – Miami broke away to a 4-1 lead to start the final frame, widening the gap to 9-3 with the help of four Eagle errors. BC slowly regained ground, going 10-6 to trail by two (15-13) but serving errors hurt both sides of the net as the teams combined for five service errors in the 16-point span. Miami won three-straight to hold an 18-13 advantage and drew a BC timeout. The Eagles went 7-4 out of the regroup, forcing a Miami timeout after pulling within two, 22-20. Miami edged out the win in the end, going 3-2 over the final five points to take the set and match, 25-22.

BC continues its homestand Oct. 19 and 21, welcoming NC State and North Carolina to Power Gym. The Eagles face NC State on Friday in the annual Dig Pink game with first serve set for 7:30 p.m. before matching up with UNC at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Both matches will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
