Women's Team Takes Two W's Over Weekend

Women's swim & dive defeated BU in a dual meet for the first time since 2006
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College swimming and diving team competed against two local rivals over the weekend – Massachusetts Institute of Technology Friday on the road and Boston University Saturday for the final home meet of the season, in which the women earned their first dual-meet triumph over BU in almost 11 years.

"I've never seen a dual-meet competition with so much energy in all of my years at Boston College," said head coach Mike Stephens. "I am incredibly proud of the women, who defeated the Terriers for the first time since 2006. Our group has been improving all season long – a testament to the hard work they have put in this year."

BC at MIT – January 26, 2018
The women's team racked up a tight win, outswimming MIT 163-137. Sophomore Victoria Lin took first in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 56.86, while sophomore Ina Elcott was a close second, clocking a 57.62 swim. Senior Emily Mann notched a time of 10:42.06 in the 1,000 freestyle for her second fastest time of the season. Freshman Ellie Uhl produced her season-best in 1M diving with a score of 262.57. The men fell to MIT, 214.5-83.5.

Other BC Highlights:
- Freshman Ali Kea took first in the 100 freestyle (53.32).
- The squad of freshman Maura Grimes, sophomore Taylor Covington, Lin and Kea were victorious in the 200 yard medley relay.
- Grimes, Elcott and freshman Michaela McGeary swept the top three finished in the 100 backstroke.
- Juniors Cecilia O'Reilly and Gabriella Teghian tied for third in 1M diving.
- Uhl created another season-best performance, scoring 264.15 in 3M diving and taking third. Taghian placed fourth with her season-best score of 255.75.
- Lin, Kea, juniors Julie Dobson and Maria Abrams claimed first place in the 200 freestyle relay.
- Junior Taylor Cortens, senior Daniel Creighton and sophomore Michael Hinton placed first, second and third, respectively, in the 100 yard backstroke.
- Individually, Cortens placed second in both the 200 breaststroke and the 200 individual medly.
- Freshman Colin O'Leary produced two second-place finishes – the 200 yard butterfly and the 200 yard backstroke.

BC vs. BU – January 27, 2018
A true feat, the women pulled out all the stops to garner a 167-133 win over BU on senior day. The relay team of Grimes, Covington, Lin and Kea clocked an impressive 1:45.05 to win the 200 yard medley relay. Covington succeeded individually as well with two lifetime bests – 1:04.70 in the 100 breaststroke and 2:23.69 in the 200 breaststroke. The men's team swam well, but ultimately fell to BU, 157-131. O'Leary produced a lifetime-best time of 1:51.39 in the 200 butterfly to take first place.

- The quartet of Grimes, junior Katherine Karle, McGeary and Elcott took the top four spots in the 100 backstroke.
- Kea won the 50 freestyle and triumphed in the 100 freestyle with a lifetime-best time of 52.14.
- O'Reilly and Uhl placed first and second, respectively, in the 1M diving.
- Freshman Natalie Dalla Riva, McGeary and Karle clocked the three best times in the 200 yard backstroke – McGeary's time of 2:05.55 was a new personal best.
- Dalla Riva, junior Erika Freeman and junior Maria Russo finished first, second and third in the 200 individual medley, respectively.
- The quartet of Grimes, Dobson, Kea and Abrams won the 200 yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:36.90.
- The relay team of Cortens, senior McKenzie Cole, junior Colin Derdeyn, and sophomore Max Threlkeld won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:33.01.
- Individually, Cortens placed first in the 100 backstroke (50.60) and 100 butterfly (50.21).
- Junior Charles Kleinsmith and Cole placed first and second, respectively, in the 100 yard breaststroke
- Kleinsmith won the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:07.11.
- Junior Jackson Rotondo took first in 3M diving

"It is very encouraging to see how well our squad is performing during such challenging period of training," said Stephens on the upcoming challenges. "We are eager to see what they can do as we shift our focus to resting for our championship meets."

Up next: The Eagles will travel to Boston University for the Terrier Open, which spans over February 9 and 10, then, beginning February 14, the women will head to the ACC Championship in Greensboro, N.C.
