Eagles, Irish ready for 24th edition of the Holy War
It's the 24th edition of the Holy War as Boston College gets set to welcome Notre Dame to Alumni Stadium today for a national televised showdown.
Â
Both teams are coming off of their first losses of the season, with ND (1-1) entering the fray after falling to 13th-ranked Georgia, 20-19, spilling the then 24th-ranked Irish from the national polls
Â
The Eagles (1-1) suffered a more rigid defeat at the hands of Wake Forest, 34-10, in which they turned the ball over four times to lead to 21 points for Wake Forest.
Â
It's been two years since these two Catholic institutions locked horns and BC, who have lost five straight games in the series, sees it as a prime time chance to prove that last week was an anomaly.
Â
"This is a great opportunity for us to show all the work we put in this offseason," said All-American senior defensive end Harold Landry. "They have a talented quarter back, a talented offensive line, but I think we'll be ready for them. We've been grinding at it with the film and giving all the looks possible at practice this week. I think we'll have a great game plan for them."
Â
Originally scheduled as a noon kickoff, this stoic matchup was bumped to 3:30 p.m. ET after Hurricane Irma postponed the Florida State-Miami game, with Steve Levy on the play-by-play, Brian Griese on color analysis and Todd McShay working the sidelines.
Â
The BC IMG Sports Network provides your local radio broadcast on WEEI 850 AM and nationally on TuneIn, Sirius channel 81 and XM channel 81, as Jon Meterparel, "The Voice of the Eagles," calls the plays, accompanied by Pete Cronan (color) and Scott Mutryn (sideline).
Â
What they're saying
Â
"I think they play really hard on defense, even more so than I remember two years ago. On offense, they have a quarterback that can beat you with his feet. We've played two of them already like that. I think he's a hell of a player. I know him. I think that he's really good. I think the challenges posed to us are taking care of the football on offense and making the plays that are very available to be made. On defense, don't give up those big hits. We've given a couple of hits up but overall, have played really, really well. But we have to eliminate those plays that move the chains and keep drives alive." – BC head coach Steve Addazio
Â
"Scot Loeffler, I have a great deal of respect for what he does offensively. Freshman quarterback who is very, very talented. I think they've added a lot of speed at the wide receiver position, size at running back. Again, it's a team that is committed to playing a lot faster. They play with tempo. We'll have to work on it this week. – Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly
Â
"This week is huge. BC-Notre Dame has been a really good game in the past few years, and in history. I was really excited to find out we were playing Notre Dame when I was first getting recruited here. This is going to be big game. We have to fight. They're definitely going to come here and fight, they're going to give us their all. We're going to have to give our all." – BC quarterback Anthony Brown
Â
"It's definitely a great challenge. BC has a great defense and they're going to have a lot of things ready for us. We're Notre Dame and we expect everybody to throw their best shot at us. There's nothing, other than that, that you can really prepare for. We're going to play our hearts out." – Notre Dame captain, tackle Mike McGlinchy
