The Eagles take on seven teams that appeared in the 2016 NCAA Tournament
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston College field hockey's 2017 schedule is set and the Eagles, fresh off their fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance, face some of the nation's best teams.
The Eagles, led by third-year head coach Kelly Doton, will take on seven opponents in 2017 that made last year's postseason national tournament and 12 that ranked in the final NFHCA poll, including the top four and six of the top seven.
"The schedule this year will be just as competitive as it was last year where we finished top five in strength of schedule," Doton said. "We've added road matches against Albany, Pacific and William & Mary, which will all be a tough contest for us. The ACC schedule speaks for itself. Every game is a fight whether we are competing at home or on the road."
Before the season gets underway on Aug. 25, BC will hone its skills with two preseason scrimmages, hosting UMass Lowell at home on Aug. 18 and at Boston University the following Sunday.
The Eagles start the regular season by opening Newton Campus Field Hockey Complex with Quinnipiac. They then travel to Albany for a matchup with the Great Danes on Aug. 27. BC is 12-0 all-time against the Bobcats and have won the two previous contests against Albany, including a 2015 meeting in the NCAA Tournament.
The Eagles head to The Spooky Sports Nook in Lancaster, Pa., for the ACC/Big Ten Cup, facing Northwestern and Maryland. BC is looking for redemption after falling to both teams in last year's matchups in the same tournament.
"The B1G/ACC Cup really sets the tone for the entire fall, Doton said. "Playing Northwestern and Maryland the second week of the season is really tough. They are two great teams who have great players and it's a battle. I know our native Pennsylvania players love playing down at the Nook as it gives them a chance to play in front of their hometown fans. We get great crowds throughout the tournament and the atmosphere is fun to be a part of."
The following week, BC opens the ACC slate by hosting rival Syracuse on Sept. 8 in a Friday evening bout. Before hitting the road again, the Eagles take on Providence on Sunday. They then play four straight away from the friendly confines of Newton Campus, including conference tilts with North Carolina (Sept. 16) and reigning ACC Champions Virginia (Sept. 22). The Eagles collected their first win against the Tar Heels since 2008 with a 2-1 home victory last season.
The Eagles return to The Heights to host Duke on Friday, Sept. 29. After a trip to Durham, N.H., to take on New Hampshire (Oct. 1), a team BC has beaten the last seven straight and 19 of the last 22 meetings, the Eagles will remain in Newton for the next three straight, taking on Louisville (Oct. 6) and local opponents Harvard (Oct. 8) and Northeastern (Oct. 13).
BC will wrap up the regular season on the road, first down Commonwealth Ave. at Boston University (Oct. 15). BC holds a slight advantage in the overall series, 15-13. They end the conference schedule at Wake Forest (Oct. 20) before returning to the Northeast to close out the regular season at Connecticut on Oct. 29. The Huskies ended the Eagles' tournament hopes last year with a 5-0 shutout in the first round and earned the win in the regular-season meeting with a 4-3 overtime win. Since 2006, BC and UConn have needed more than regulation to decide six meetings.
The ACC Tournament begins on Thursday, Nov. 2 in Louisville, Ky. The NCAA Tournament starts on Nov. 11. The Final Four, which is set for Nov. 17, will also be hosted by Louisville.
