HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles were the first to strike, plating a run in the first inning. Casey started the game with a single through the left side. Junior Jake Palomaki put him in scoring position with a sac bunt and senior Michael Strem drove in the first run of the game with a single through the right side.
- The Canes tied the game the following inning. With two down, Tackett singled through the left side and Edgar Michelangeli followed with a bunt single. Christopher Barr scored Tackett with a base hit to left.
- BC scored three in the second to take a 4-1 lead. With runners on first and second and one out, Dempsey singled through the right side to score the go-ahead run. Runners landed on second and third after right fielder Nico Baldor mishandled the ball. Casey scored the second run with a sac fly to right. Dempsey moved to third on the fly out and scored on a base hit by Palomaki.
- Miami made it a two-run game in the third after Randy Batista reached on a fielding error and scored on a double by Michael Burns.
- Tackett closed the gap to one in the sixth with a solo home run – his second of the series – to right.
- The Eagles executed small ball to make it a 5-3 game in the bottom of the inning with reliever RHP Evan McKendry on the hill. Yish led off with an infield single and ended up on second after second baseman Romy Gonzalez's throw to first was wide. A chopper moved him to third and Dempsey brought him home with a safety squeeze on a bunt down the first-base line.
- The Canes tied the game in the eighth and chased sophomore starter LHP Dan Metzdorf from the game. They led off with a single and double and Casey came to the mound. Tackett doubled to left center to make it a 5-5 game. Casey got a strikeout and grounder for two quick out before walking the No. 9 batter to put runners on the corners. He got out of the inning with a strikeout swinging.
- The Eagles had a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the eighth as senior Johnny Adams led off with a double to right and moved to third on Dempsey's third sac bunt. An infield popup and strikeout quickly ended the BC threat.
- Miami took the lead in the ninth as Casey hit the lead-off batter and Gonzalez hit a home run over the left-center wall to take a 7-5 lead. The Canes loaded the bases on a double, bunt single and intentional walk and Michangeli hit a sac fly to bring a run. Barr cleared the bases with a single to shallow left. Junior LHP Carmen Giampetruzzi came into the game and after hitting a batter, gave up back-to-back home runs to make it 14-5. Freshman RHP Jack Cunningham relieved Giampetruzzi and got a strikeout and fly ball to end the inning.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Strem recorded his 58th career double in the ninth. He ranks second in BC record books.
- Dempsey made a fielding error in the third, the first for the Eagles in the last seven games.
- The six runs allowed by Casey were the most allowed in his career in one outing. They also were more than he had given up all year coming into the outing (four).
- The last time BC surrendered back-to-back home runs was in 2013 when Georgia Tech's Kyle Wren and Sam Dove completed the feat (March 16).
- It is just the third time this season the Eagles have tallied at least 10 hits and lost a game.
- The Eagles are 0-3 this season when tied after eight innings.
- Miami clinched the series with Saturday's win and earned the regular-season series victory for the seventh time in the two teams' histories. The Canes have won the last three meetings between the two teams, dating back to the 2016 Super Regional.
OF NOTE
- The Eagles hosted Miami in the Fifth Annual Wounded Project Game. Before the start of the game, local veteran Chris Kinney threw out the first pitch and the women's soccer and field hockey teams presented the large American flag during the live national anthem.
- On Thursday, the Eagles hosted local veterans in a softball game at Shea Field.
