The rising junior All-Americans will serve as field hockey captains next season
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Rising juniors Ymke Rose Gote and Frederique Haverhals will serve as captains of the Boston College field hockey team for the 2017 season, head coach Kelly Doton announced at the team's annual banquet on Saturday evening.
Â
Both Gote and Haverhals are among the top field hockey players in the nation as each earned National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-America honors for their play during their sophomore seasons in 2016.
Â
"I firmly believe the success of a team starts with its leadership," Doton said. "Every spring, we go through a thorough captain selection process. Ymke and Frederique have been leaders since they stepped foot on our campus and have overwhelmingly impacted their teammates. And as a result, they were voted captains. With these two at the helm, I know the team will always be put first and they will strive to make sure everyone is living up to the standards of wearing a Boston College field hockey jersey."
Â
Gote garnered NFHCA Third-Team All-America honors after anchoring the Eagles' midfield last year. As a sophomore, Gote started all 20 games and collected five assists, the second-highest total on the team. A key component of the Eagles' offensive and defensive corner units, Gote was also an NFHCA First-Team All-Northeast Region honoree, as well as an All-ACC Second Team performer. Off the field, Gote was a member of the 2016 ACC All-Academic Team. Additionally, she is on the Executive Board of the Boston College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Â
Haverhals was one of the youngest players to earn 2016 NFCHA First-Team All-America honors, joining just three other sophomores on the first team. In 2016, she started all 20 games at center back and finished the season fourth on the team in scoring with 17 points (5 goals, 7 assists). Like Gote, she was a constant presence on both attacking and defensive corners while playing almost every minute of the season. Â Haverhals also garnered NFHCA First-Team All-Northeast Region and All-ACC Second Team honors. In the classroom, she earned placed on both the NFHCA National Academic Squad and the ACC All-Academic Team.
Â
In 2017, Doton is set to return 16 players to her squad that last year advanced to its fourth-straight – and 11th overall – NCAA Tournament.
