Second Varsity Four Takes Bronze at Murphy Cup

The Eagles saw three-of-five boats earn spots in grand final races.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Boston College rowing team competed in its first regatta of the spring season on Saturday, March 25, at the Murphy Cup in Philadelphia, Pa. In a full day of races, the Eagles saw three boats advance to the grand finals of their respective races.
The Second Varsity Four, led by senior coxswain Erika Charnley, started the morning heats strong by qualifying for the grand final with a time of 7:31.5. In the afternoon final, the crew put together another great performance, shaving four seconds off its qualifying time to earn the bronze medal with a time of 7:27:2. The boat finished behind Pennsylvania A and Navy.
Also earning spots in the grand finals were the Varsity Four and the Varsity Eight. The Four won its heat decisively with a time of 7:44.4 and finished sixth in the final heat. As for the Eight, the crew won its morning heat in a tight race with Bates to advance to the final, where it posted a time of 6:35.56 to finish fourth.
In the 13th event of the morning, BC entered two boats among the 30-crew lineup in the Junior Varsity Eight.
BC's B boat raced in the second heat against a challenging field of Eights. The crew put together an aggressive race and finished third with a time of 7:18.46. Its time was one of the fastest among "B" entries, but the crew did not advance to the finals.
BC's A boat competed in the sixth and final heat of the event and were edged by the Navy B, who placed first in the heat just 14 tenths of a second in front of BC. With a time of 7:03.46, the BC A boat advanced to the Petite Final. Determined to have a better outcome, the crew won the race with a time of 6:39.26.
