Eagles add new assistant coach with experience at top club program, USA Field Hockey
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College field hockey head coach Kelly Doton announced today that she has added Mark Foster to her staff as an assistant coach. Foster replaces Phil Edwards, who departed after two seasons to join U.S. National Team head coach Janneke Schopman's staff at USA Field Hockey.
Foster comes to The Heights after two and a half years with one of the top club programs in the country, WC Eagles, based in Pottstown, Pa.
With WC Eagles, Foster has been part of the coaching staffs of five teams that have won the USA National Club Championships: Under-14 (2015, 2016), Under-16 (2015, 2016) and Under-19 (2015).
He's also spent the last two years as a staff member with USA Field Hockey's National Indoor Team.
In both positions, he's done extensive work developing players' season-long fitness regimes and providing video analysis to the teams and players.
"I'm extremely excited to welcome Mark to Boston College," Doton said. "When he first stepped foot on campus, I could tell immediately the passion he had for the University. His ability to develop the technical skills of our athletes, combined with his tactical knowledge, made him the ideal candidate. He was highly recommended by those who are currently coaching high-level hockey and I'm happy we have him here at BC. His ideals, personality and coaching style will fit in great. I can't wait for him to start working with our athletes and staff this spring."
Before coming to the U.S., in 2014, Foster began his coaching career in England at his alma mater, Durham University. At Durham, he coached both the Women's Development and Performance teams.
At Durham, Foster captained the men's field hockey team, and was part of the squads that won the 2012 and 2014 Premier North division before advancing to the national tournament both seasons.
"I am extremely honored to be joining Boston College and Kelly Doton's staff," Foster said. "I'm excited by the opportunity to work with and learn from Kelly, and to create something special with this program. The student-athletes at BC are fantastic and I hope to help them grow as players and people as we strive to toward our goal of bringing championships to BC."
The 2016 Boston College field hockey team advanced to its fourth-straight NCAA Tournament and its 11th overall. The Eagles matched their best-ever ACC conference record (3-3) and drew their highest-ever seed at the ACC Championship: No. 3. In 2017, Doton is set to return 16 players, including a pair of All-Americans, both rising juniors: defender and first-team selection Frederique Haverhals and midfielder and third-team honoree Ymke Rose Gote.
