All 31 BC teams participated in the annual Adopt-A-Child Gift Wrap Party
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -Â Many of the Boston College student-athletes took a break from studying for finals on Tuesday to participate in the annual Adopt-A-Child Christmas Party in the Shea Room in Conte Forum.
Teams and staff members "adopted" children this holiday season and provided them with both gifts on their wish lists as well as necessities they may not otherwise receive. BC works with several community-driven organizations to fulfill kids' wants and needs during the holiday season.
This year, the Eagles granted wishes to more than 120 children. All 31 teams, as well as administrators, staff and coaches participated, helping to sponsor multiple children. This marked the third straight year that over 100 children were sponsored.
For the first time at the event, student-athletes also had the opportunity to write cards to U.S. soldiers and seniors who are home-bound.
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) president and softball captain Allyson Frei looks forward to the event every year.
"The Adopt-A-Child Christmas party is my favorite event every year," Frei said. "It brings student-athletes, coaches and the administration all together for an opportunity to give back to the community. Each team 'adopts' children and purchase everything from toys to clothing, and we all get together to wrap them and create holiday cards for the troops and homebound seniors. This time of year, it is especially about giving to others. It's incredible to see all of BC Athletics so eager to help local kids have a happy holiday."
Â
Brianna Gladney, one of BC's administrative organizers of the event, added, "We have partnered with Boston DCF for 35 years and this year we were able to provide for over 120 students! This tradition for Boston College Athletics is so important because, not only does it show that student-athletes truly embody our Jesuit values, 'men and women for others', but also displays the fellowship between student-athletes, staff and coaches. BC Athletics is truly a family and our athletes understand how fortunate they are to be part of a great community and love to give back."
