Lonergan, Watts draw recognitions after stand-out weeks on the ice
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – A pair of Boston College women's hockey players were honored with Hockey East weekly awards on Monday after standout performances last week.
Â
Sophomore forward Caitrin Lonergan was tabbed the league's Warrior co-Player of the Week, sharing the award with New Hampshire's Carlee Turner, while freshman forward Daryl Watts (Toronto, Ontario) was selected as the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week.
Â
Lonergan tied for second nationally in scoring last week – behind Watts – as she helped the second-ranked Eagles go 2-0-0 with wins over No. 9 Providence and at Syracuse. On Friday against the Friars, Lonergan recorded a three-point day with two goals and one assist. It was her seventh multiple-point game of the year and her fifth game with three or more points. On Saturday, she scored the game-tying goal at Syracuse before setting up Toni Ann Miano's game-winning goal just 1:05 later as BC twice came back from two-goal deficits to claim the 4-3 road win.
Â
Watts paced the nation in scoring last week, collecting six points in the team's two wins. On Friday, she recorded her fourth four-point game of the year with a one-goal, three-assist effort against the ninth-ranked Friars. On Saturday at Syracuse, she scored the Eagles' first goal to start the team's comeback, and then assisted on Lonergan's game-tying goal in the second period.
Â
Watts and Lonergan are ranked No. 1 and 2 in the country in scoring with 27 and 23 points, respectively. Watts also leads the nation in goals (12), assists (15), points per game (3.00), goals per game (1.33), assists per game (1.67), power-play points (9), power-play assists (5) and shots per game (5.89).
Â
Among all players playing a full-time Division 1 schedule, Lonergan is tied for third in goals (10), tied for second in assists (13), second in points per game (2.56), third in goals per game (1.11), second in assists per game (1.44) and second in power-play points (8). Â Â
Â
This is Lonergan's first Hockey East weekly honor of the season – and the fifth of her career – and the first player of the week honor of her career. For Watts, this is her fourth conference weekly honor of her career. She has been recognized all four weeks the Eagles have played this season.
Â
No. 2 Boston College (8-0-1) returns to the ice on Friday, Nov. 10, when the team travels to Canton, N.Y. for a weekend series against No. 7 St. Lawrence (5-3-1) at the Saints' Appleton Arena.
