Boston College Athletics

Getting To Know Emily Safron
January 26, 2017 | Women's Tennis
Q: Why did you choose to attend BC?
Â
A: I chose BC because it's in Boston, which is where everybody wants to go to college. I can drive to myhouse from here. There's good tennis, and it's in the ACC. Plus Lexi Borr and I have been best friends since we were 10 years old, and we always wanted to go to college together. They had roster spots for both of us, so it was perfect fit in so many ways.
Â
Q: What's your greatest strength?
Â
A: My fight. My results are better than maybe they should be since I fight really hard and never give up. I have a good forehand too.
Â
Q: What are some of your personal and team goals for the season?
A: I want to work as hard as I possibly can for my team and myself. I have only one semester left in my college career and I want to play my best tennis and hopefully lead us to an NCAA postseason selection.
Â
Q: What did you see from Saturday's match against Virginia that encouraged you?
Â
A: We lost a very close 4-3 match but it was really encouraging to have our freshman contributing. I saw great fight from all the freshmen, especially Elene Tsokilauri who was on court in the deciding match.Â
Â
Q: What's the difference between yourself now and when you were a freshman?
Â
A: I definitely have a different perspective now. I work so hard at my tennis and put some much mental and physical energy into preparing for our season. When I was a freshman, I had a great fear of losing but I have learned to deal with the ups and downs better. The ACC is such a great conference and it can be humbling at times and I just do the very best that I can.
Â
Q: What's your best tennis-related memory?
Â
A: It's hard to say. Almost all my memories are tennis-based because I started playing when I was 3. Every school I've ever been to has been as a result of tennis – a school that could accommodate my tournament schedule or practice schedule and having to leave halfway through some days. Every substantial relationship or decision I've made in my life has been a result of tennis. I wouldn't have met Lexi if it weren't for tennis. I wouldn't have went to my high school if it weren't for tennis. All my best friends – even if I didn't meet them directly from tennis, I met them as a result of tennis.
Â
Q: Do you or have you ever had any superstitions?
Â
A: I used to have many, and now I can't really think of any. I used to be kind of psychotic. I once had a tournament on Thanksgiving. The restaurants were closed, so my dad and I got microwavable dinner, and I won my match. So we got microwavable dinners every day during the trip. Thinking back, it was horrible. Who would do something like that and why would my dad appease that? What an enabler, right (laughing)?
Â
Q: Did it work?
Â
A: Well, I ultimately lost, so superstition doesn't work. Just take care of yourself, drink water, do what you can and practice hard.
Â
Q: What are your post-college plans or ambitions?
Â
A: I hope to get into the film/television industry. My internship in LA was with a media production company, and it was really an amazing experience. I want to continue with that, but I'm not sure exactly what I want to do. As I said, I love New York, so I hope to be in New York or maybe LA.
Â
Q: What's the last film you watched that you loved?
Â
A: The last movie I saw in theaters was Moonlight, and I loved it.
