Devlin S-AFE Trip: Day 4
January 13, 2017 | Devlin Student-Athlete Formation & Succe
For the eighth straight year, Boston College student-athletes are spending part of winter break in the New Orleans area on the Devlin S-AFE Trip. The week-long trip is centered on community service in partnership with SBP (formerly the St. Bernard Project), helping families rebuild homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina 11 years ago.Â
Each day, student-athletes will reflect on the day's activities. For more information about the trip and its purpose, check out the trip overview and check back for daily recaps.Â

As you may already know, we have spent the majority of this trip in New Orleans, but our fourth day was spent in Baton Rouge.
A flood recently devastated this area last August and the damage was still very prevalent. Driving through the neighborhood, we saw house after house that had been vacated and piles of debris from the flood lying outside almost every house. The house we worked on belonged to an elderly couple whose home of 45 years had been submerged 4-5 feet in water. Our task for the day was to dry wall the entire house.
Dres really knew what she was doing when it came to putting up dry wall, but it was all new to me. Â Everyone got into small groups and picked an area of the house that they would dry wall. Jen, Dres, and I worked on the hallway. At one point, we were putting up our second piece of dry wall up and over a doorway. Let's just say we had an interesting learning moment of how not to cut out a doorway...luckily we are able to roll with things and get back to safely dry walling the house!Â
The rest of the workday went smoothly. Dry wall was successfully put up throughout the majority of the house and the homeowners were very grateful. After a long day of work, it was really rewarding to see a smile on their faces.
We headed down to LSU after to shower and get ready for dinner at a restaurant called Mike Andersons. We were able to see a little bit of the LSU campus and stadium before going to eat.
The stadium was massive and seeing the campus and stadium as the sun was setting — the name Death Valley given to LSU all made sense. At dinner we had a variety of southern dishes that were delicious including fried catfish and jambalaya and had some good bonding time with our whole group.
We finished the day with reflection when we got back to the bunkhouse. We talked about how cool it was that we were able to take this trip to Baton Rouge and help out a family in an area that was hit with recent tragedy. Overall, it was another successful day out here in Louisiana and we are looking forward to our final day, day five!
