Meehan drafted by Sky Blue; Dowd stays home with the Boston Breakers
Boston College graduate senior McKenzie Meehan and senior Hayley Dowd were both drafted in the fourth round of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) Thursday. Meehan was selected 34th overall by the Sky Blue Football Club in New Jersey, while Dowd was drafted by the local team – Boston Breakers – 38th overall.
Meehan, who received her MBA from Boston College in December 2016, leaves The Heights as the program's all-time leader in points, goals and game-winning goals. She became the all-time leader in goals scored as a junior against Pittsburgh. In her final season at BC, Meehan notched her final goal against Virginia to give her 58 career goals and 124 career points.
The speedy forward is a three time All-ACC honoree, twice named a first team selection. Meehan was named to the 2016 NSCAA All-Southeast Region second team and was a three-time Preseason Hermann Trophy Watch list honoree.
Dowd, who will graduate from the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences in May, was the Eagles second leading scorer with seven goals and three assists for 17 points. She also had four game-winning goals this past season. She is third on the all-time list for game-winning goals with 14.
A native of Peabody, Dowd is the program's second leading goal scorer with 39 strikes and sixth in points scored with 90.
Dowd, who was a team co-captain with Meehan this past season, was a two-time All-ACC second team honoree. She made the All-ACC Rookie team in 2012, when she scored 12 goals.
Meehan and Dowd being drafted gives the Boston College program 10 players drafted by the women's professional soccer league.
