Eagles’ junior tabbed the top defensive player in the country last week
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – After earning ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Tuesday, Boston College field hockey junior Chelcie Mendonca has added Longstreth/NFHCA National Defensive Player of the Week honors for her effort in the Eagles' wins over then-No. 3 North Carolina and Northeastern last week.
Â
Lining up at right back, Mendonca and the BC defense helped the Eagles go 2-0 on the weekend and move to 4-3 on the year and 1-1 in ACC play.
Â
In the 2-1 victory over the third-ranked Tar Heels – the Eagles' first since 2008 – Mendonca scored the game-winning goal and helped the defense hold the Tar Heels to a single score. Mendonca and the Eagles' defense limited UNC to only 13 shots, well below their season average of 17.5 to date. Carolina averaged 4.5 goals per game coming into Friday's contest. Mendonca and BC also killed off seven of the Tar Heels' eight penalty corners.
Â
In Sunday's 8-1 win, the Brampton, Ontario, product helped limit Northeastern to one goal and also assisted on the game-winning goal.
Â
This is Mendonca's first national weekly honor from the NFHCA.
Â
The Eagles – now ranked No. 9 after last weekend's results - return home this weekend for a pair of games at the Newton Campus Field Hockey Complex. On Friday, BC hosts No. 16 Virginia (4-4, 0-1 ACC) at 6 p.m., before welcoming Massachusetts (4-3, 1-0 A10) on Sunday, Sept. 25, at 2 p.m.
