Eagles’ junior named defensive player of the week after performances against UNC and Northeastern
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College field hockey junior Chelcie Mondonca has been named co-ACC Defensive Player of the Week after her performances in the Eagles' wins over then-No. 3 North Carolina and Northeastern last week.
Lining up at right back, Mendonca and the BC defense helped the Eagles go 2-0 on the weekend to move to 4-3 on the year and 1-1 in ACC play.
Â
In the 2-1 victory over the third-ranked Tar Heels, the Eagles' first since 2008, Mendonca scored the game-winning goal and helped the defense hold the Tar Heels to one goal. In Sunday's 8-1 win, the junior back from Brampton, Ontario, helped limit Northeastern to one goal and assisted on the game-winning goal.
Â
This is Menconca's first ACC weekly honor and the Eagles' first conference player of the week nod since Oct. 27, 2015 when All-America goalkeeper Leah Settipane was chosen co-defensive player of the week.
Â
The Eagles – now ranked No. 9 after last weekend's results - return home this weekend for a pair of games at the Newton Campus Field Hockey Complex. On Friday, BC hosts No. 16 Virginia (4-4, 0-1 ACC) at 6 p.m., before welcoming Massachusetts (4-3, 1-0 A10) on Sunday, Sept. 25, at 2 p.m.
