The right-hander ties for the highest pitcher selected in BC history
MIAMI, Fla. – Boston College junior Justin Dunn was selected 19th overall in the first round of the 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Players Draft by the New York Mets on Thursday night. He tied for the highest BC pitcher ever selected and was the second first-round pick in the last two years for the Eagles.
The right-hander is the sixth Eagle to be drafted in the top 50 and the eighth pitcher to be taken in the first 10 rounds. Chris Lambert (2002-04) was also selected 19th overall in 2004 by St. Louis. Dunn joins former BC infielder Eric Campbell (2006-08) in the Mets system. Campbell has made the big league roster in 2015 and 2016.
Dunn owes a 3.45 career ERA, good for fifth in BC record books, and a 9-6 overall record. He has combined for six shutouts in his career and racked up seven saves – tied for seventh all-time at Boston College. Over 120 career innings, he has allowed 110 hits, 51 runs – 46 earned – just 48 walks and struck out 124. Batters are hitting just .247 against Dunn in his career, and his .208 opponent batting average in 2016 is fifth on the school's single-season record list. Of the 110 career hits allowed, just 25 are for extra bases.
The Freeport, N.Y., native leads the pitching staff with a 1.49 ERA, first in the Atlantic Coast Conference, and currently tops on BC's single-season list. He was recently named to Baseball America All-American Third Team and he picked up All-ACC Third-Team and NEIBA All-New England Second-Team accolades earlier in the season. He was named a semifinalist for the Greg Olson Award which honors college baseball's breakout player of the year.
Dunn picked up his fourth win against 15th-ranked Tulane on June 3 in the opening round of the Oxford Regional, striking out a career-high 11. In his seven-inning start, he allowed just one walk, five hits and two runs, collecting All-Regional Team accolades for his work on the mound.
This season he is 4-1 with two saves and three combined shutouts on the year. He made seven starts this season and recorded a 1.43 ERA with 43 strikeouts and just 13 walks in those outings. Before transitioning to a starter, he had nine appearances out of the bullpen, racking up a win, two saves, 17 strikeouts and just three walks. He helped the Eagles to their first ACC Baseball Championship appearance in six years with his first career complete game at No. 22 Georgia Tech on May 21, allowing just six hits, three runs – two earned – without walking a batter. He recorded nine strikeouts and earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors for his efforts.
Dunn was originally drafted in the 37th round of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers before coming to The Heights.
