BC HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Boston College's championship hopes came to a halt on Thursday evening when the No. 1 ranked Bobcats of Quinnipiac University defeated the Eagles, 3-2, in the NCAA Frozen Four semifinal game. BC's season comes to an end with a final record of 28-8-5.Â
- The semifinal matchup between Quinnipiac and BC was the first time the two squads had ever faced each other.Â
- 2016 marked an NCAA record 25th appearance for the Eagles in the Frozen Four all-time and the 12th with coach Jerry York at the helm of the program. York also had a Frozen Four appearance in 1984 as the Bowling Green head coach. His 14 Frozen Four victories as a head coach is tied for second most with Denver's Murray Armstrong (1958-1972) while only Michigan's Vic Heyliger recorded more Frozen Four victories in his coaching career (16).Â
- Making its NCAA-leading 25th Frozen Four appearance in 2016, Boston College sits at 36-13 all-time in tournament play under coach York. Â The Eagles are 11-7 all-time in the Frozen Four games since 1999, when the NCAA officially called the NCAA semifinal and final round the "Frozen Four."
- Thursday's game marked the final collegiate action for the team's four seniors: Teddy Doherty, Travis Jeke, Peter McMullen and Brendan Silk.Â
TURNING POINT
- Quinnipiac capitalized on two BC turnovers in the game's first 7:20 to take an early 2-0 lead that was never diminished. Despite two BC goals that brought the score within one, including a Ryan Fitzgerald tally in the final five minutes, Quinnipiac held on to skate in the national championship title game against the winner of Denver and North Dakota.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Quinnipiac took advantage of a slow roller behind the BC net that the defense couldn't skip out. At 2:31 of the first period, the Bobcat's Scott Davidson stole the puck and flicked it to Kevin McKernan in front of the net for the game's first goal, one that slid through the five-hole to give QU the early 1-0 lead.Â
- Less than five minutes later, the Bobcats responded again with another shot that found the back of the Eagles net. Following a BC turnover in their own zone, the puck swung out front and was capitalized on by Andrew Taverner, who beat Demko glove side to go up 2-0. Travis St. Denis was credited with the assist.Â
- 23 seconds into the second period, Casey Fitzgerald's effort to keep the bouncing puck in the zone paid off as he fired a shot from beyond the circle that was touched by White at the front door. Alex Tuch, coming back door, knocked it in past Garteig for the Eagles first score of the evening.
- Off a faceoff on a Quinnipiac power play, Landon Smith redirected a bouncing puck to regain their two goal lead, 3-1, at 4:32 of the second period.
- At 15:44 of the third period, the Eagles netted a power play goal to bring the score within one. Following a faceoff win by Ryan Fitzgerald, the puck was pushed back to the top of the zone where Teddy Doherty passed it across to Ian McCoshen, who threw it on net. The elder Fitzgerald attacked the net and redirected McCoshen's rebound for his 24th goal of the season.Â
