Urbinati picks up first win in No. 4 singles slot; Vasilyev and Sweeting go 2-0 on the day
BOSTON - The No. 49 Boston College women's tennis team improved to 4-1 on the season after Friday's 5-2 victory over No. 68 Portland in a non-conference home match played in Boston.Â
After the Eagles claimed two wins in doubles to take one point, BC won four-of-six singles matches to secure the match.Â
"I thought we did a good job of being mentally tough and staying optimistic," head coach Nigel Bentley said. "There were some momentum swings but we were able to find a way when it counted."
The No. 2 doubles tandem of Emily Safron and Katya Vasilyev defeated Portland's duo of Maja Mladenovic and Tori Tropsch, 6-1. In the No. 3 match, Asiya Dair and Wan-Yi Sweeting combined to take a 6-4 win over Radina Dimitrova and Tatiana Grigoyan.
With one point in hand, BC used singles wins from No. 108 Lexi Borr - playing her first match on the second court this season, Vasilyev, Urbinati and Sweeting. Urbinati and Sweeting's victories improved their season singles marks to .500, while Vasilyev moved to 4-1 on the season.Â
Dair, who was playing her first match after drawing a national ranking of No. 48 in the new rankings earlier this week, fell in the No. 1 singles match following a second-set tie-break.Â
BC (4-1, 0-1 ACC) returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 13, when they host Dartmouth at 5 p.m. at Dedham Health and Fitness Complex.Â
