Ritchie, Serafini Olympic Team Hopefuls
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.—Tim Ritchie ('10) and Louis Serafini ('13) look to take on the nation's best in the marathon to earn a spot on the US Olympic team. The Olympic Trials begin this weekend in Los Angeles. The runners will embark on their 26.2-mile trek just outside of the Staples Center and the top-3 finishers earn themselves a trip to Rio de Janeiro as part of the US Olympic team.
Ritchie, currently the assistant coach of the track & field and cross country teams at BC, enters the race having come off an impressive victory at the Rock 'n' Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon last October. Ritchie crossed the finish line in a stunning 1:01:22, the second fastest time in the US in 2015. His performance earned him the spot at this weekend's qualifier.
The Worcester- native graduated from BC in 2010 with a degree in biology and theology. During his time in the Heights, Ritchie made a name for himself as one of BC's most accomplished long-distance runners.
He was a two-time captain of the cross-country team and was the New England Champion in 2008. He went on to finish second at the ACC Championships. Other than coaching, Ritchie runs professionally for Saucony.
Serafini, who was teammates with Ritchie in 2010, also enters this weekend following an impressive performance. Just last month, Serafini finished second in the NYRR Midnight Run. The 24-year-old finished the race in 18:40, only six seconds behind the winner.
Serafini describes 2015 as a "breakthrough year" for him, and it certainly appears so. The Niskayuna, N.Y.- native earned the designation of USATF New England Runner of the Year in 2015, following a plethora of impressive finishes this year. Serafini currently runs professionally for Heartbreak Hill Running Company, founded by BCTF graduates Dan Fitzgerald and Justin Burdon
The race will be televised on NBC on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 1 p.m.
