Dudek's Hat Trick Lifts Eagles to Victory at UConn

Sophomore forward JD Dudek broke out on Tuesday night at the XL Center, netting his first-career hat trick to get the Eagles back on the winning track in a 5-2 triumph at Connecticut

BC HIGHLIGHTS & GAME NOTES
- Sophomore JD Dudek scored Boston College's third hat trick of the season and 341st in program history in the victory. Dudek not only registered career highs in goals (3) points, (3) shots (7) and plus/minus (+2), he also recorded his first-career power play goal (second tally of his three) and his second-career game-winning goal. The Auburn, N.H. native's hat trick marks college hockey's 28th hat trick of the season. Austin Cangelosi (Nov. 4) and Christopher Brown (Oct. 16) also scored hat tricks for the Eagles this season.
- Senior assistant captain Ryan Fitzgerald notched his first three-point performance of the season with a goal and two assists in the victory. The North Andover, Mass. native assumed the team lead in points with 16 (5-11-16) after tonight's performance.
- Julius Mattila scored his first goal since returning from injury tonight. The Finnish product now has two goals on the season. He also added an assist for his second-career multi-point performance and first since Oct. 16 at Wisconsin.
- Head coach Jerry York is now 3-1-1 against his former associate head coach at Boston College, Mike Cavanaugh. Cavanaugh is now the head coach of the Huskies.
- Boston College remains unbeaten in league play having assembled a 6-0-1 mark in conference play. The Eagles are five points clear of second-place UMass Lowell with 13 points.
GOAL DESCRIPTIONS
FIRST GOAL - FIRST PERIOD – Max Kalter – 00:24 – EVEN STRENGTH
• Both penalty killing units prevented a pair of power plays each side, but Connecticut managed to skate into the locker room following the first horn with a 1-0 lead. Joseph Masonius broke up a Boston College breakout and gained the zone with Kasperi Ojantakanen up front. Ojantakanen had Max Kalter to his left and he perfectly timed the one-timer past and Kalter snapped it past Joseph Woll on the left dot with 23.8 seconds left for the 1-0 Huskies lead.
SECOND GOAL – SECOND PERIOD – Ryan Fitzgerald – 4:34 – EVEN STRENGTH
• Boston College got on the board early in the second to tie it up after Austin Cangelosi and Christopher Brown worked it between the circles to Ryan Fitzgerald. Cangelosi shifted the play over from atop the left circle over the Brown on the other side. Brown tossed the puck at the net and Fitzgerald redirected it past UConn goalie Adam Huska to tie it, 1-1, at 4:34.
THIRD GOAL – SECOND PERIOD – JD Dudek – 11:51– EVEN STRENGTH
• Following R. Fitzgerald's tally, both teams played hard with chances on either side, but a huge breakaway by JD Dudek with the finish gave the Eagles their first lead of the game. Scott Savage won the puck off the near boards and passed it back to R. Fitzgerald who was deep in Boston College's zone. Dudek broke free and R. Fitzgerald threaded the needle from blue line to blue line and Dudek corralled it just in time to stay onsides. Dudek streaked towards Huska and beat him with a nifty deke on the backhand at 11:51 for the 2-1 lead.
FOURTH GOAL – THIRD PERIOD – JD Dudek – 10:28– POWER PLAY
• Boston College pounced on its last power play opportunity of the game after Justin Howell went off for tripping at 10:15. Julius Mattila fished the puck off the near boards and connected with Connor Moore at the top of the circles. Moore wound up and blasted it towards Huska and Dudek skated across the goalmouth and redirected it to the back of the net 13 seconds in for the 3-1 lead.
FIFTH GOAL – THIRD PERIOD – Julius Mattila – 11:20 – EVEN STRENGTH
• On the following exchange, Matthew Gaudreau and Chris Calnan worked together to create space for Jul. Mattila on the far post. Gaudreau flung the disc across to Chris Calnan on the red line to create the two-on-one situation with Jul. Mattila. Calnan walked it down to the right post and shifted it over to Jul. Mattila on the opposite side for the tap-in goal 52 seconds after Dudek's power goal to make it 4-1.
SIXTH GOAL – THIRD PERIOD – Miles Gendron – 15:38 – EVEN STRENGTH
• UConn got one back at 15:38 of the third period to get to within two, 4-2. Corey Ronan set Miles Gendron up with an unattested one-timer on the near post and Gendron beat Woll up to for the Huskies' final tally of the night.
SEVENTH GOAL – THIRD PERIOD – JD Dudek – 17:52 – EVEN STRENGTH
• Dudek capped the hat trick with 2:08 left in regulation after Jesper Mattila fished the puck out to R. Fitzgerald in the flank. R. Fitzgerald gained the zone with Dudek and Fitzgerald let loose a perfect pass to Dudek's tape on the far post at 17:52 to ice the 5-2 victory.
