Burke, Kennedy to Race in NCAA Championships Saturday
November 17, 2016 | Boston College Athletics, Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
Sophomore Sean Burke and junior Isabelle Kennedy will race following individual at-large berths to the 2016 NCAA Cross-Country Championships.
Boston College sophomore Sean Burke and junior Isabelle Kennedy both qualified for the 2016 NCAA cross-country championships following their performances last weekend at the NCAA Division I Northeast Regional Meet at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y.
Â
Burke finished 8th place overall in the men's 10k race with his time of 30:45.73, showing vast improvement from his 86th place finish at the Northeast Regionals meet in 2015. He is the first men's cross country athlete from Boston College to qualify for the NCAA Championships since former BC men's assistant coach Tim Ritchie qualified in 2008. Burke's twin brother, Collin, will be competing as well this weekend, running for the UCLA Bruins.
Â
Kennedy, in the women's 6k race, took home third place overall with her time of 20:18.98, also improving on her 2015 finish of 16th place. After having no athlete race in the 2015 NCAA Championships, Kennedy is the first Eagle to race at NCAAs since 2014, when then-senior Liv Westphal finished 30th overall and earned All-American honors for her performance. Then-senior Danielle Winslow also participated in the meet, finishing in 85th place and current junior Ashbrook Gwinn ran as a freshman. Kennedy keeps up a strong tradition for the Eagles, who have had a team or individual qualify for the Championships in every year other than 2015 since 2008.
Â
Burke and Kennedy will head to Terre Haute, Ind., this Saturday, where the meet will be hosted by the Indiana State Sycamores. The women's race will begin at 11 a.m. ET while the men are set to race at approximately noon ET.
