Boston College lost to No. 8 Virginia, 3-2, at Klockner Stadium in the Eagles final regular season road game on Sunday afternoon. BC is now 10-7-1 and 2-7-0 in the ACC, while Virginia improved to 12-3-2 overall and 5-2-2 the conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- McKenzie Meehan scored in the sixth minute as she broke away from the defense off a nice long ball from Lauren Berman. Meehan carried the ball with defenders on her side and placed the ball by UVA's Morgan Stearns for a 1-0 lead. It was Meehan's 12th goal of the season. The senior striker left the game after scoring with an injury.
- Rookie Olivia Vaughn had a chance to put BC up 2-0 in the 24th minute. Vaughn, who replaced an injured Meehan, broke between two UVA defenders. She had a slight window and her left footed shot went to the far post as Stearns deflected the ball just wide.
- Virginia had a chance to tie the match as the Cavs earned a penalty kick on a foul in the box in the 33rd minute. Alexis Shaffer stepped up to take the shot and BC's keeper Alexis Bryant made the save but the rebound bounced back to Shaffer. Bryant cut off Shaffer's angle as the UVA midfielder pushed her second attempt wide. BC held the lead, 1-0.
- Early in the second half, Kayla Jennings had a shot in the box but UVA keeper Morgan Stearns was there to make the save. Jennings was set up by a great individual effort by Hayley Dowd, who sent Jenna Bike into the corner. Bike then found Jennings in the box.
- UVA was awarded another penalty kick as Eagles keeper Alexis Bryant collided with a Cavs forward Hannah Kerner in the box. Bryant faced Shaffer on the second penalty but this the UVA senior scored to tie the match, 1-1, in the 52nd minute of the game.
- Bryant kept the game tied minutes later when UVA had a shot in the box by Veronica Latsko. Bryant came out and deflected the ball wide. It would be minutes later off a corner kick when the Cavs took the lead. Jasmine Wright pounced on a loose ball off a corner kick that the Eagles did not clear out of the area. The shot from 22 yards out went to the far post in the 56th minute and the Cavaliers took the lead, 2-1.
- BC's continued to press forward as Lauren Berman had a shot of tying the game in the 60th minute. The junior midfielder had a box drop at her feet in box and the one-timer sailed just over the crossbar.
- Virginia went up 3-1 on a header from Kristen McNabb in the 74th minute off a corner kick.
- The Eagles cut into the lead when sophomore Gaby Carreiro scored off a set piece in the 80th minute. Carreiro placed her shot from 20 yards out into the far corner for her first goal of the season.
- BC had five shots on goal while UVA had eight in the match. The Eagles had just three corner kicks in the match.
