HIGHLIGHTS
Despite a first set battle that saw Boston College victorious, the Syracuse Orange had the better of the Eagles in the remaining three sets and handed BC their first conference loss of the season. Katty Workman had a game high 17 kills while Kam McLain added 14 kills.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One:
The first set featured 17 tied scores between the visiting Eagles and host Orange as the two teams battled it out and a quite even match. With the score tied at 23, a Syracuse service ace put BC on the defense as the Orange were looking to take the first frame. However, Anna Skold tied the game back up at 24 with one of her seven kills on the evening before Julia Topor followed with a kill of her own to give the Eagles the one point advantage. A Syracuse attack error helped the Maroon and Gold take the first set 26-24.
Set Two:
Much of the intensity of the first match carried over into the second as both teams found themselves in another back-and-forth battle that resulted in Syracuse taking the second set 25-21. After trailing 15-10, Syracuse fought to get back in the set with a 6-1 run that allowed them to even the score at 16 apiece. Although they regained a three point edge nearing the final points, the Eagles couldn't sustain their lead while the Orange finished on a 7-0 run to even the match score at one all.
Set Three:
Syracuse jumped out a quick start in the third frame as they held Boston College to only 10 points, taking the set by a score of 25-10. Syracuse's Gosia Wlaszcuk and Nicolette Serratore each had three kills in the third set.
Set Four:
Syracuse jumped out a 3-0 lead in the fourth and final set, winning by a score of 25-18. The Eagles cut the Syracuse lead to three midway through the frame at 16-13 but the Orange had a response to every Eagle attempt at evening the score. Syracuse finished on a 9-5 run as they handed the Eagles their first conference loss of the season.
COACH QUOTES:
"We played great volleyball for the first set and a half, but we had a chance to go up 2-0 and let it slip away. Unfortunately, we did not recover our poise until midway through the fourth set which was a bit too late."
