Hockey East's Full Preseason Poll
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – After winning the last two Hockey East regular-season titles, the Boston College women's hockey team has been tabbed the preseason favorite to win its third straight crown, as announced by Hockey East this morning.
Katie Crowley's women's hockey team garnered all eight available votes from the league's other eight coaches, with Boston University finished second behind the Eagles with one first place vote. Coaches were not able to vote for their own team.
The Eagles are coming off a program-best season in 2014-15, setting school records for wins (34), fewest losses (3), goals scored (195), points scored (521), assists (326) while leading the nation in goals per game (5.00) and margin of victory (3.79 goals per game) and posting the country's fourth-best defense (1.21 goals per game allowed).
Crowley returns 17 letterwinners from last year's team and has added seven freshmen to the 2015-16 squad.
The returnees include the 2015 Patty Kazmaier Award winner, senior Alex Carpenter, who led the nation in scoring, goals and assists with 81 points on 37 goals and 44 assists, as well as senior Haley Skarupa, the country's third-leading scorer with 71 points on 31 goals and 40 assists.
Both Eagles were members of the U.S.' gold-medal winning team at the 2015 IIHF Women's World Championships, where they were joined by current BC teammates sophomore Megan Keller and senior Dana Trivigno.
The Eagles also return five of their six regular defensemen, including senior Lexi Bender and Keller, who both earned Hockey East All-Star honors in 2014-15.
In goal, sophomore Katie Burt - the 2014-15 Hockey East Goaltending Champion - also returns one year after leading the nation in goals against average (1.11) and winning percentage (.886). Burt, as well as incoming freshman defenseman Grace Bizal, helped the U.S. Under-18 National Team claim gold at the 2015 IIHF Under-18 World Championships last January.
Carpenter, Trivigno and junior Andie Anastos are serving as the Eagles' captains this season, while Bender and Skarupa will serve as alternate captains.
Boston College hosts Guelph in a 7 p.m. exhibition match on Friday, Sept. 25, at BU's Walter Brown Arena. The team officially gets the 2015-16 season underway on Friday, Oct. 2, when the Eagles host Minnesota Duluth in the first of two games at Kelley Rink.
