June 12, 2015 | Field Hockey
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Three members of the Boston College field hockey team - rising juniors Emily McCoy, Eryn McCoy and rising sophomore Alyssa Olenick were selected to participate in the upcoming USA Field Hockey 2015 Young Women's National Championship.
Additionally, Eagles assistant coach Phil Edwards has been chosen to coach one of the squads at the tournament.
The event will be held Monday, June 22 through Friday, June 26, at Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Lancaster, Pa., the home of USA Field Hockey.
"I'm excited for the opportunity that Emily, Eryn and Alyssa have in competing in the U-21 National Championship," BC head coach Kelly Doton said. "The idea of one day competing for your country is something that this tournament represents. These three have a true passion for field hockey and work hard at improving their game. Their commitment to playing at a high level over the summer will only aid in their preparation for the fall."
Emily and Eryn McCoy are coming off sophomore seasons that saw the twins both earn NFCA All-Northeast Region second-team honors.
Eryn McCoy led the Eagles with 25 points on 10 goals - including the game-tying score with eight minutes remaining in the Eagles' first-round NCAA Tournament bout with Penn State - and five assists. The sophomore forward earned league accolades on Oct. 21 after tallying seven points against No. 7 Louisville and California. McCoy scored both of the Eagles' goals in the 2-1 victory over U of L, including the OT game-winner.
Emily finished the 2014 season second on the team with 23 points on 10 goals and three assists. The sophomore earned ACC Co-Player of the Week on Oct. 28 after tallying three points (one goal, one assist) in a crucial victory over No. 8 Virginia.
Olenick made seven appearances as a freshman back in 2014. She made her collegiate debut in the Eagles' 3-0 win over Quinnipiac on Aug. 29 and played the first six matches of the season as a substitute before missing all but the final regular-season match on Oct. 28 at Harvard.
The three players will be vying for a place on the U.S. Under-21 National Team, which is traditionally announced in July.
