
Souders Earns Gold At Pan American Championships

SANTIAGO, Chile - Former Boston College fencer Peter Souders `12 led Team USA to the gold medal in the Men's Team Saber Pan American Championships held in Chile last weekend.
Team USA was the top seed in the direct elimination table and received a bye into the quarterfinals. After defeating Colombia, 45-24, the Americans faced Mexico in the semifinals. With the score tied, 37-37, Souders gave the US a two-touch lead as he won his bout, 40-38. Team USA went on to win that match, 45-40.
In the gold medal final against Canada, Souders scored a crucial 5-1 win after Team USA held a two-touch lead. His win gave the Americans a 30-24 lead and they would go on to win, 40-37.
"Pete fenced out of his mind in that sixth bout where he went 5-1 and turned that into a six-point lead," teammate and Olympian Jeff Spear said.
