Devlin S-AFE Trip, Day 2
January 07, 2015 | Devlin Student-Athlete Formation & Succe
Seventeen BC student-athletes have traveled to New Orleans to rebuild homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina as part of the Devlin S-AFE Service Immersion Trip. Each day, student-athletes on the trip will write about the experience.
Day 2
It was an early wake up call for the Eagles again today.
We were at our worksite at seven this morning, and got right to work with putting up drywall right away (which is harder than it sounds). Although it may have taken each group all day to complete their relatively small room, it was a day well spent.
After a day of hard work, we made a quick trip to Bayou Bienvenue. During our visit, we learned about how the poor structural decisions made by Louisiana officials contributed to the severity of Katrina's impact, especially in the Ninth Ward. After a group picture, we were off to the French Quarter.
We all got a new perspective on the disaster after visiting the "Living With Hurricanes" exhibit at the Louisiana State Museum. As we moved from room to room, we watch videos, listened to survivors of the storm and learned about first responders, the Super Dome, and the victims' living conditions. After seeing the damage and destruction the storm caused, we all changed the way we think about this event.
Before we headed back to the house, we had to stop and try some of New Orleans' famous beignets. We had some time to walk around the French Quarter and Bourbon Street, and got a taste of New Orleans' culture that we were so excited to experience.
To end the day, we had a delicious meal of classic southern New Orleans dishes at Jacques-Imo's. We stuffed ourselves on local favorites like alligator, shrimp cheesecake and fried grits.
We can't wait to wake up at sunrise tomorrow to get back to dry walling. We're so excited to be part of a Welcome Home party for a woman who will be returning to her home after 10 years.
Check back tomorrow for another update!
