Waltham, Mass. -
The Boston College women's soccer team lost to No. 23 Clemson, 1-0, on Sunday morning at the Gordon Field on the campus of Brandeis University. Boston College improved to 8-4-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the conference, while Clemson is now 8-2-1 overall and 1-2-0 in the ACC.
Clemson scored the lone goal in the 56th minute of the game. Shannon Horgan directed a header over the outstretched hands of BC goalkeeper Darien Dunham (four saves) for a 1-0 Clemson lead.
In the first half, Clemson had a 5-2 edge in shots while both teams had three corners apiece. Clemson's best attempt came off a corner kick in second minute of play. Tiger midfielder Tori Andreski deflected the corner from Katie Sprouse towards the goal but BC's rookie keeper Darien Dunham closed in on the ball and made the save.
BC's senior forward Stephanie McCaffrey was active all game, drawing a number of defenders around her. In the 12th minute, she sent a cross to the far post and sophomore Rosie DiMartino just missed getting a foot on the ball.
In almost the exact play, Jillian Lutz slid towards the ball in the box to attempt a deflection of a cross from Lauren Bernard. The ball just went wide of the goal. BC's best chance came as McCaffrey broke free of the Clemson defenders and ripped a shot from 30 yards out towards the goal. The ball bent from right to left just over the far post as the horn sounded to end the half.
McCaffrey opened the second half with a near post shot from inside the box off a cross from Hayley Dowd. Clemson's goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan (two saves) hugged the post and made the stop to keep the game tied at 0-0 in the 51 minute.
After the goal by Clemson, BC's best chance came off a shot from Hayley Dowd in the 59th minute of play. She stole the ball from a defender to the left of the goal. Dowd's shot was from 12 yards out to the left of the keeper. Sheridan easily handled the shot to keep Clemson ahead, 1-0.
Clemson continued to pressure BC, moving the ball with ease around the field. BC struggled getting anything going forward as Clemson outshot the Eagles, 14-5, in the match. Dowd led the Eagles offense with three shots, while McCaffrey managed two.
Boston College will travel to New York to play at Syracuse on Saturday, October 4 at 7 p.m.
