October 23, 2014 | Women's Soccer
Winton-Salem, N.C. -
The Boston College women's soccer team lost to Wake Forest, 4-3, at Spry Stadium on Thursday night in an ACC matchup. The Eagles are now 3-5 in the ACC and 10-7 overall, while Wake Forest is now 5-8-2 overall and 3-4-1 in the conference.
Just five minutes into the game, Wake Forest forward Sarah Teegarden sent a low shot to the far left of the goal and it just beat BC goalkeeper Alexandra Johnson for a 1-0 lead.
A little over a minute later, Eagles forward Hayley Dowd scored her ACC leading 13th goal of the season to tie the game. Jana Jeffrey sent the ball into the top of the box; Dowd won the ball from a Wake Forest defender. Dowd took two dribbles and beat the Wake Forest goalkeeper Lindsay Preston to the left to tie the game at 1-1.
Wake Forest went up 2-1 as Teegarden scored off a corner kick in the 23rd minute of play.
BC almost tied it in the 28th minute when Jeffrey ripped the ball off the crossbar. The rebound came out to Andrea O'Brien, whose header was punched out by Preston.
O'Brien got revenge in the 30th minute when she was sent into the box off a beautiful through ball from senior Stephanie McCaffrey. The senior forward dribbled through two defenders and saw O'Brien make a run into the box. McCaffrey placed the ball between the defenders and O'Brien one-timed it to the back of the goal to tie the match at 2-2.
Johnson (season-high 10 saves) kept the game knotted at 2-2 on a great save in a one-on-one situation. Rigik broke in on Johnson off a through ball. By the time she gathered the ball on her foot Johnson was out cutting down the angle and punched it out in the 40th minute of the match.
Dowd came through in the 57th minute with her 14th goal of the season. Dowd was sent into the box by sophomore Rosie DiMartino.
Wake Forest's offense pushed forward as the Deacs had two chances on through balls to Riley Ridgik. Two chances were snuffed out by Johnson. The Demon Deacons earned a corner kick when Jonson tipped a third chance from Rigik shot wide. Off the corner, Wake Forest's Fishlein headed the ball to the far corner and Claudia Day tipped it in with a soft header by Johnson in the 70th minute.
With the game at 3-3, McCaffrey had a chance in the 76th minute that Preston punched over the crossbar.
Rigik gave Wake Forest a 4-3 lead in the 80th minute as she beat out a BC defender to one-time the ball to the near post.
Wake Forest had a 14-7 edge in shots on goal and a 10 corner kicks to six for BC.
The Eagles will next play at Duke (7-8-1, 3-4-1 ACC) on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Fans can watch the game live on the Blue Devil Network. Also remember to follow the team on Twitter/@BC_WSOC.
