New Haven, Conn. - Senior Jessica Wacnik won the ITA/USTA Northeast Regional Championship Tuesday morning at the Cull-Heyman Tennis Center at Yale University with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Yale's Hanna Yu, an All-Ivy First Team selection last season.
Wacnik was the first Eagle to reach a singles regional final, and therefore, the first to win a regional title. The road to the final was not an easy one, as Wacnik defeated five of the Northeast's elite competitors en route.
Wacnik received a first round bye and a round two victory over Yale's Yi, 6-1, 7-5. Wacnik then squared off against D'Ascenzo of Cornell on Sunday morning and was victorious with a score of 6-3, 6-2.
Next, Wacnik defeated Salazar from Syracuse, 4-6, 6-0, 6-4. On Monday morning, Wacnik defeated Asatrian of Columbia in a three set battle, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0. Finally, she defeated June Lee from Harvard in a gritty three-setter, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
As the winner of the Regional Championship, Wacnik earns a spot at the USTA/ITA Naitonal Indoor Championships at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. at the beginning of November.
