CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College men's hockey team remains undefeated at Kelley Rink this season after scoring its highest total in nearly 29 years, blasting Army in an 11-0 shutout on Sunday afternoon. Ten different goal scorers and four-point performances from Johnny Gaudreau (2-2-4) and Bill Arnold (1-3-4) anchored the Eagles' offensive explosion in their fourth-consecutive victory.
All but two skaters in Sunday's lineup scored at least one point while seven Eagles posted multi-point performances. The 11-goal triumph marks Boston College's largest margin of victory since beating Boston State on Nov. 23, 1976, by an 18-0 final.
Gaudreau netted his national-leading 14th-career game-winning goal in power play fashion. Juniors Brian Billett and Brad Barone combined for the shutout, marking BC's first blanking since shutting out UMass Lowell, 1-0, on Oct. 26, 2012. It was also the first home shutout since topping Northeastern, 3-0, on Oct. 20, 2012. Both Billett and Barone steered aside 15 shots apiece.
The Eagles attacked on three of their five power play opportunities (60 percent) and denied the Black Knights on their four chances.
Gaudreau set the precedent early, scoring at 4:11 and 8:40 of the first. The first strike occurred via the power play after Garret Peterson was whistled for tripping at 3:03.
Gaudreau scooped up the puck on Army's left dot after Scott Savage smacked it loose on the forecheck and glided through the neutral zone. With two defensemen already back, Gaudreau split the two blue liners, brought the puck to his backhand and beat Rob Tadzak in tight at 3:03.
The ensuing goal occurred in almost identical fashion.
Rookie Steve Santini flung the puck around the rim over to the far corner where Isaac MacLeod and Arnold were able to wrangle it to Gaudreau in nearly the same spot. Gaudreau flew from one end of the ice to the other and finished off his second tally of the period to put the Eagles ahead, 2-0.
BC continued to dominate time of possession and lit the lamp for the third time of the frame at 11:48.
Gaudreau quarterbacked the scoring play from the top of the circles and connected with Austin Cangelosi down on the right dot. Cangelosi threw a head fake at Tadzak, knocking him off his bearings where Arnold slipped in from behind and polished off the tic-tac-toe play for the three-goal pad at 11:48.
Fitzgerald added the fourth of the period at 13:27 in power play fashion, marking BC's second power play in as many chances.
After a Connor Costello interference call at 12:59, Kevin Hayes gathered the puck off the far wall and passed it deep to Adam Gilmour behind the net. Gilmour immediately popped it out to the left dot where Ryan Fitzgerald banged home the one-timer down low for the power play strike at 13:27.
The Eagles wasted no time scoring early in the second stanza. Hayes broke up an Army breakout, keeping the puck in play. The disc skidded to Fitzgerald where he cut through the circles and kicked back a no-look dish to Evan Richardson five strides back. Fitzgerald moved it back too quickly for Tadzak and Richardson finished off the scoring play at 2:38 for a five-goal Eagles' advantage.
After Matthew Gaudreau scored his first-career goal at 14:41 of the second, Army skipper Brian Riley opted for Parker Gahagen.
Chris Calnan blasted the puck into traffic from just within the blue line. Peter McMullen was jamming up the middle of the crease and the puck caromed off of his stick to M. Gaudreau where he was able to slip it under Tadzak's pad.
Gilmour notched the Eagles' third power play goal seven seconds after Joe Kozlak was cited for roughing at 16:37. Gilmour benefitted from Ian McCoshen's slap shot that bounced through the crease in a perfect spot to shove back in for the seven-goal buffer.
The Eagles did not relent in the final frame and added four more. Michael Matheson (1:33), McCoshen (2:21), Cangelosi (11:20) and Hayes (12:59) rounded out the 11-goal final.
Matheson's goal from Gilmour was a quick sniper from the left dot while McCoshen's cashed in off of Cangelosi's rebound. Gaudreau and Arnold set Cangelosi up beautifully in front for the 10th tally and MacLeod and Fitzgerald worked together on the forecheck to set up Hayes for the final blow.
The Eagles outshot Army, 49-30, in the triumph.
Boston College returns to league play with a trip to the Mullins Center on Thursday, Nov. 14, at Massachusetts. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Eagles will return to Kelley Rink on Friday evening to close out the two-game Hockey East series with UMass on Nov. 15 at 7 p.m.
Game Notes
- The last time Boston College and Army met on Oct. 22, 1994, Jerry York made his debut as Eagles’ head coach behind the bench. BC won, 9-3.
- After a seven-point weekend, including a pair of game-winning goals, Johnny Gaudreau leads the nation in points per game. The Carneys Point, N.J., native has scored nine goals and nine assists and as many games, leading the NCAA with 2.00 ppg. Gaudreau has now scored two goals in a game 10 times in his career.
- Johnny Gaudreau’s 14-career game winning goals is the most of any active player in college hockey.
- Boston College's 11 goals scored marks the most in a game for the Eagles since defeating UMass Lowell, 15-6, on Jan. 30, 1985. The last time Boston College scored 11 goals in a game was against Holy Cross on Nov. 19, 1984.
- Sunday’s 11-0 win over Army was the Eagles largest margin of victory since beating Boston State on Nov. 23 1976, 18-0.
- Sunday’s shutout marks the first blanking since Oct. 26, 2012, when BC beat UMass Lowell, 1-0. It marks the first shutout at Kelley Rink since beating Northeastern the outing before on Oct. 20, 3-0.
- Matthew Gaudreau, brother of Johnny Gaudreau, scored his first-collegiate goal in his BC debut against Army. It marks the first time a brother tandem scored a goal in the same game since Jimmy Hayes (2008-11) and Kevin Hayes each scored a goal in a 5-1 victory at UMass Lowell on Jan. 29, 2011.
- Peter McMullen notched his first collegiate point, assisting on Matthew Gaudreau’s first college goal. For McMullen, it was his first contest of the season and seventh of his career.
- Ian McCoshen notched his first short-handed goal at Boston College. The Eagles have scored four short-handed markers on the season.
