
Women's Tennis Drops ACC Battle to Virginia Tech

Blacksburg, Va. - No. 53 Boston College women's tennis team lost to Virginia Tech, 5-2, on Saturday morning at Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg. The Eagles (7-7, 1-3 ACC) tallied two singles wins, but could not overcome the Hokies (10-5, 2-1 ACC).
Senior Erina Kikuchi tallied two victories on the day, winning her singles match in the No. 1 position, defeating Martha Blakely, and pairing with freshman Jessica Wacnik to take the only doubles point the Eagles earned on the day, also in the No. 1 spot. Kikuchi lost the first set to Blakely, 6-3, before rallying in the second, 6-3, to force a tiebreaker. She won, 10-2, for the point. She and Wacnik, ranked 62nd in the nation, defeated Blakely and Carol Kahoun, 8-5, for the win in doubles action. Wacnik fell to Isel Martinez-Marcos, on the second court in a hard-fought battle, 7-5, 7-5, in her singles match.
Senior Katarina Gajic also recorded a point for BC, winning in straight sets in the No. 4 position. The captain defeated Courtney Rauscher, 6-4, 6-2. Gajic and junior partner Ina Kauppila lost in the No. 2 doubles position, 8-4, to Rauscher and Shannon Betts. Kauppila fell to Emily Lauten, 6-3, 6-2, on court six, in singles play.
Juniors Kelly Barry and Alex Kelleher fell to Lauten and Martinez-Marcos, 8-5, on the third court in the doubles matches. Barry dropped her singles match in the No. 5 spot to Kahoun, 6-1, 6-3, while Kelleher lost to Betts, 6-4, 6-0, in the No. 3 position.
The Eagles will face No. 24 Clemson on March 23 in Weymouth, Mass., at 3 p.m.
