Chestnut Hill, Mass. -The Boston College volleyball team was defeated, 25-14, 25-16, 25-22, by NC State on Friday night in Power Gymnasium. Freshman Courtney Castle led the Eagles (4-9, 0-2 ACC) with eight points, posting team-highs in digs (9), total blocks (4) and aces (2) to supplement a trio of kills.
The Wolfpack (13-1, 1-0 ACC) was led by Brie Merriwether's 12 kills. Margaret Salata (11) and Nicole Glass (10) also recorded double-digit kills in the win. Freshman Kellie Barnum distributed a team-high 11 assists, adding a dig, kill and block assist for Boston College.
Sophomore Melissa McTighe hit .333 with no errors on nine opportunities. The middle hitter put away the first shot of the match to put the Eagles up, 1-0, but the lead was short lived. NC State evened the first set at three and went up on a kill by Salata. The Wolpack registered an attack percentage of .342 to take the first game, 25-14.
The second concluded in similar fashion, ending in favor of NC State, 25-16. Down by two heading into the third game, the Eagles spread out the offense. Barnum connected with junior Krystle Higgins to pick up three of the Eagles first six points and, later, found senior Tsvetelina Dureva twice as Boston College battled to 13-13.
A pair of errors then put BC down by two. Play advanced with the Maroon and Gold trailing at the two-point disadvantage until McTighe paired with Barnum and Castle to tie the score, 18-18.
A pair of Wolfpack attacking errors then put BC up by two, 20-18, but Merriwether and Glass countered kills from McTighe and Dureva to tie the third game, 22-22. An attacking error from BC and two NC State blocks ended the match, 25-22, on the following plays.
The Eagles will continue their ACC slate on Sunday, Sept. 25, against North Carolina at 12 p.m. in Power Gym. Fans unable to attend are invited to follow the action live via GameTracker.
