Junior Victoria DiMartino scored in overtime to lead No. 13 Boston College past No. 11 Maryland, 2-1, at Ludwig Field in College Park, MD on Thursday night. BC is now 7-0-2 and 2-0-0 in the ACC, while Maryland is 7-2-2 and 1-2-0 in conference.
DiMartino got on the end of a long ball sent towards the goal by freshman Casey Morrison. DiMartino beat a defender to the ball and one-timed it by the Maryland goalkeeper Yewande Balogun for the Eagles stunning comeback victory.
The win was significant for two reasons. One key reason was to keep the Eagles undefeated in the conference at 2-0 while the second gave head coach Alison Foley her 200th career victory.
Boston College's comeback started when the Eagles tied the game in the 87th minute of the match. Kristen Mewis sent a ball in front of the Terps goal. A Maryland defender misplayed the ball and it deflected into the back of the net. It was recorded as an own goal.
The Eagles played behind most of the game as Maryland scored eight minutes into the match. Haley Brock broke free into the box off a high bouncing ball sent across the field by Balogun. Brock beat an Eagles defender to the ball and was one-on-one with BC goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni. Though the Eagles goalkeeper came out to cut down the angle, Brock went low to the far corner for a 1-0 Terps lead.
BC's Julia Bouchelle attempt to tie the match came in the 25th minute. Bouchelle's header, which came off a corner kick, hit the crossbar. Off another Boston College corner kick with 17 minutes to play, Alaina Beyar shot from 20-yards out went to the far corner. A Terrapin defender kicked the shot off the goal line.
Minutes later, Patrice Vettori tipped a pass from Bouchelle toward the goal but again a Maryland defender headed the shot away. Freshman Stephanie McCaffrey had a good chance inside the box as her shot just went wide with 10 minutes left in the first half.
Boston College had a 10-5 edge in shots at the half. The Eagles also had six corner kicks to the Terps three.
In the second half, Boston College suffered a scare when Mastroianni collided with Brock. Slowly the senior goalkeeper recover after losing her breath in the collision. BC struggled most of the half to mount any offensive threat.
The Eagles even moved Mewis from the right side back to the left with hopes of getting her more touches. The Maryland defense smothered two of BC's hottest players in Mewis and McCaffrey.
With 21 minutes to play, Mastroianni kept it a one goal game as she tipped a header from Kristen Schmidbauer over the crossbar. BC's best chance in the second half came when Mewis unleashed her left-footed shot. The offering hit the crossbar with 13 minutes to play in the game.
After regulation, Boston College had 13 shots to 11 for Maryland.
The Eagles will complete the second leg of an two-game ACC road trip on Sunday when they play at Virginia Tech.
