No. 6 Field Hockey Hits the Road this Weekend

After a strong showing last weekend, the Boston College field hockey program will continue its three-game road trip in hopes of extending the squad’s unbeaten streak away from home this season. The Eagles will take on Virginia at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23 before traveling to American on Sunday, Sept. 25 for a 1 p.m. tilt.
Boston College Notes
• BC heads into this weekend’s games with a 6-2 overall record and a 0-1 mark in the ACC.
• The Eagles went 1-1 against a pair of ranked opponents last week. BC downed No. 4 UConn, 3-1 on Sept. 18 and forced No. 3 Maryland into overtime, but eventually fell, 4-3, on Sept. 16.
• The Eagles climbed two spots in this week’s NFHCA and WomensFieldHockey.com polls to No. 6 in the nation.
• BC has recorded three shutouts in 2011, good for seventh-best in the country. In addition, the squad has given up more than one goal just twice in eight games.
• Boston College currently leads the ACC in five team stats categories, including goals scored (32) and assists (26).
• As a team, BC has outshot its opponents, 148-73, and forced more corners, 58-39.
• BC has been unstoppable after scoring first, as the squad holds a 5-0 record when it strikes first.
• The Eagles are currently an undefeated 3-0 on the road this season.
• Grad student Anna Wetherall had a breakout game against Maryland on Sept. 16, scoring the first two goals of her career. She then recorded the game-winning goal at UConn on Sept. 18. She now has current two-game point streak.
• Sophomore Paige Norris has become an important play maker for the Eagles, as she leads the team with seven assists. Norris’ mark also leads the ACC and is tied for ninth in the nation.
• Senior Carla Tamer leads the team with seven goals and has tallied a team- and conference-best 17 total points through eight games.
• Adding to the offensive threat for BC is sophomore Chapin Duke and senior Courtney Tavener. Duke has recorded six goals, while Tavener has four goals and four assists, for 12 points.
Scouting Virginia
• Virginia is currently 4-5 overall on the season. Friday’s game against BC will mark the team’s first conference matchup of 2011.
• Last week, UVA went 0-2, falling to Northwestern and California.
• After being ranked at No. 18 last week, the Cavaliers dropped out of the polls this week.
• Sophomore forward Elly Buckley currently has a team-best 13 total points (5 goals, 3 assists).
Scouting American
• American enters this weekend’s contest with a 2-4 overall record. The squad is slated to play at Richmond on Friday, Sept. 23 before BC comes to town on Sunday.
• The Eagles will look to earn a much needed win this weekend in order to break a recent three-game skid.
• Sophomore forward Alex McMackin currently leads the AU offensive effort with seven points (3 goals, 1 assist).
Series History
• Virginia currently leads the all-time series, 8-4, against Boston College. In 2010, the Eagles took the game to overtime, but the Cavaliers would go on to win, 3-2.
• Boston College and American University have only ever met twice in the existence of the programs and the all-time series is currently tied, 1-1. The squads’ last met in 2001, when BC earned a decisive 5-1 victory against AU.
