Newark, N.J. - The Boston College volleyball team was defeated in straight sets by TCU in its opening match of the Seton Hall Invitational on Friday afternoon at Walsh Gymnasium. Freshman Courtney Castle led the Eagles (3-6) with eight kills, nine digs and an ace against the Horned Frogs (11-0).
Senior captain Brennan Clark paced BC with 16 digs, while classmate Lina Dureva totaled eight points off of six kills and two block assists.
TCU relied on Kristen Hester (12 kills) and Sloane Sunstrom (10 kills, 8 digs) for the majority of its offense. Megan Munce's 35 assists and Sarah Joeckel's 22 digs were match-highs.
Eagles were unable to surmount an early lead by TCU and fell in the first set, 25-15. After the Horned Frogs rolled out to a 15-5 advantage, the two sides traded points to the wire. Sophomore Melissa McTighe had success on the attack, going 3-for-5 with no errors in the initial frame. Castle also noted her first three kills in the first.
TCU quickly built a lead in the second and rode the momentum for a win, 25-13, in the second. Castle tallied the first of her four kills at 2-1, but the Horned Frogs scored the next seven points before BC got on the board again. Attacking errors account for most of the scoring on both sides, but the Eagles also claimed points on blocks by McTighe, Dureva and junior Krystle Higgins.
Down two sets to none, Boston College came out fighting in the third. Kills from sophomore Cagla Sen and Dureva allowed the set to go back-and-forth to 5-5, before two kills and an ace put TCU up by three.
After a timeout from the Eagles, Castle and Dureva put away shots, but the TCU stretched its lead to six, 13-7. BC then closed the gap by scoring five of the next six points on two kills from freshman Kellie Barnum, an ace by Dureva and attack errors.
At 14-12, TCU tallied two more kills to increase its lead and although the Eagles eventually pulled within two, 20-18, BC was unable to pulled ahead and fell, 25-20, in the third.
Boston College resumes the Seton Hall Invitational tonight at 6 p.m. against the Pirates.
