No. 14 Field Hockey Opens Home Schedule Against Maine

After winning its first two games of the 2011 season on the road, the No. 14 Boston College field hockey squad looks to continue its success in the team’s home opener against the University of Maine Black Bears on Tuesday, Aug. 30 at 4 p.m. The game will take place on the Eagles’ home turf at the Newton Sports Complex. Boston College Notes
• The Eagles boast a 2-0 overall record so far in 2011. The squad collected two decisive victories in Vermont last weekend, defeating the Catamounts, 5-1, and earning a 5-0, neutral-site victory against UMass.
• As a team, BC has outshot its opponents, 48-11, and forced more corners, 21-6.
• The Eagles have made the most of their opportunities during penalty corners in 2011, with five of the team’s 10 goals coming in that fashion.
• Senior goalkeeper Nicole Barry recorded both wins in the cage for BC, marking her first-ever collegiate decisions.
• Sophomore Chapin Duke leads the Eagles’ offensive effort with four goals on the season. She recorded the first multiple-goal game of her career on Friday, Aug. 26 against Vermont, and notched another the following day against UMass.
• Seniors Courtney Tavener and Carla Tamer are tied for second on the team with six points apiece through the team’s first two games of the season.
• Freshman Maura Keith scored her first career goal on Saturday, Aug. 27 against UMass.
Scouting Maine
• The Black Bears enter Tuesday’s matchup at 1-1 on the season. The squad lost, 3-2, in its season opener against Northeastern on Friday, and then defeated Siena, 8-0, on Saturday.
• Senior Stephanie Gardiner leads Maine with three goals and one assist through the team’s first two games. Senior Jocelyn Mitchell has added to the Black Bears offense with two goals and one assist.
• Maine was selected to finish tied for third in the 2011 America East Preseason Coaches’ Poll, released on Tuesday, August 16.
Series History
• Boston College leads the all-time series, 9-1, against Maine. The squads last met on September 30, 2007, when the Eagles earned a decisive, 5-0, shutout victory at home against the Black Bears.
• The first meeting between BC and Maine occurred in 1987. BC won the game, 2-1.
