Freshman Stephanie McCaffrey scored her first career goal to lead Boston College past former Big East foe Rutgers, 1-0, in front of 444 fans on Friday night at the Newton Soccer Field. The Eagles improved to 2-0-1, while Rutgers is now 1-1-0.
McCaffrey scored in the 42nd minute of the match. Junior Kristen Mewis saw McCaffrey making a run to the far post. Mewis sent a low ball just over the defense and McCaffrey sped by a defender and one-time the ball to the left of the keeper for her first career goal.
The game went back-and-forth throughout the night. Rutgers controlled much of the first half. The Scarlet Knights struck early attacking right off the kick-off and earned the first of four corner kicks in the first half.
BC's best chance prior to the goal came off the foot of Mewis, when she struck the crossbar in the 33rd minute of the match. The junior midfielders shot came from her dangerous left foot from 23 yards out and skidded off the crossbar.
After the first half, BC held a tight 5-4 lead in shots taken, while Rutgers had four corner kicks to zero for Boston College.
The second half continued to be a battle. BC opened with a corner kick but could not capitalize. Senior Julia Bouchelle had a great chance to give BC a two goal lead but Rutgers goalkeeper Emmy Simpkins was ready for the one-timer from the BC midfielder.
BC had two great chances off a corner kick with 16 minutes left in the match. Mewis sent a long ball to the far post. Senior Alyssa Pember headed the ball towards the goal but a Rutgers defender blocked the shot. Eagle's freshman Rachel Davitt tried to one-time the rebound but again a Rutgers defender stepped in and cleared the shot.
Rutgers had three great chances to tie the match with under 10 minutes to play. After a foul by BC, Stefanee Pace shot was smothered by Mastroianni. Karla Schacher sent a shot toward the Eagles goal seconds later but the Eagles defense blocked the shot just inside the 18-yard box.
With 26 seconds to play, Rutgers was awarded a direct kick right outside the box by the referee when Mastroianni held the ball over the allotted time. Rutgers Julie Lancos shot was blocked by the Eagles defensive wall and trickled wide of the BC goal.
BC had 13 shots to nine for Rutgers. Rutgers earned five corner kicks to two for BC. Mastroianni picked up her second shutout of the season as she made three saves in her 51st career win. Scarlet Knights goalkeeper Emmy Simpkins had three saves.
Boston College will next play next on Thursday, September 1 as the Eagles will host Syracuse at 7 p.m.
