No. 10 Women's Soccer Takes on Rutgers on Friday

Chestnut Hill, MA - If you love soccer then come to the Newton Soccer Field off Centre Street in Newton on Friday, August 26. The Boston College women's and men's soccer teams will be playing back-to-back matches. The men will open up the regular season with a match at 4 p.m. against George Mason. The No. 10 BC women's team will then host former Big East foe Rutgers University at 7 p.m. Admission is free for both games.
No. 10 BC vs. Rutgers
Boston College has the edge, 7-5-3, in the head-to-head series vs. Rutgers. BC has won the last three matches, including a 3-1 win over Rutgers last year at Yurcack Field in Piscataway, New Jersey.
Rutgers is coming off a 1-0 win over Drexel in its season opener on Monday night (Aug. 22). Sophomore Jonelle Filigno scored the game-winner in the 38th minute. BC is currently 1-0-1. The Eagles earned their first win of the season on Sunday (Aug. 21) vs. Fairfield. Junior midfielder Alicia Blose scored the lone goal in the 29th minute of play. The win gave senior goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni her 50th career victory, which is now a new program record.
The Eagles opened the season with a 1-1 tie against cross-town rival Boston University on August 19. Junior Victoria DiMartino scored the game-tying goal in the second half.
Corner Kicks
• Victoria DiMartino passed her sister Gina DiMartino in the on the Eagles all-time points list. Victoria now has 72 career points, while Gina finished her career at BC with 71.
• Alicia Blose's game winning goal vs. Fairfield on August 26 was her first career goal.
• Jillian Mastroianni notched her 34th shutout in the 1-0 win over Fairfield on August 26. Mastroianni needs four more shutouts to hold the all-time record at BC.
• Coach Alison Foley is also creeping up on two milestones. The win over Fairfield gave her 190 career wins at Boston College, just 10 away from 200. The win gave her 195 overall career victories, just five away from a personal best of 200 wins.
• In the last four years, BC is 26-0-3 in non-conference games at home. The Eagles are 32-7-3 in non-conference games over the last four years.
• BC's starting lineup includes only one freshman in Casey Morrison. Morrison is a native of York, Pennsylvania and was a NSCAA Youth All-American in 2010. Morrison has stepped in for former BC standout Hannah Cerrone in the back line.
• Sophomores Kate McCarthy, Gibby Wagner and Zoe Lombard have stepped in to starting spots this season. McCarthy and Lombard earned her spot after a strong NCAA Tournament. Wagner battled injuries last season and was in and out of the lineup last season. All three have started the Eagles first two games.
• Juniors Kristie Mewis and Victoria DiMartino were named to the Preseason Hermann Trophy Watch List. It was the second time both were named to the watch list.
• Jillian Mastroianni, Kristie Mewis and Victoria DiMartino were all named to the Soccer America Preseason All-American team.
• Boston College alums Kia McNeill and Gina DiMartino are members of the Philadelphia Independence in the WPS. McNeill is a starter on defense for Philadelphia. The Independence will play Western New York on Saturday, August 27 (4 p.m.) in the WPS Championship Match. The game will be televised on Fox SportsNet. McNeill will return to Boston after the match to take on her duties with the Eagles as a volunteer assistant coach.
