Field Hockey Opens Season on the Road

The Boston College field hockey squad opens its regular season with a pair of games in Burlington, VT this weekend. BC will take on Vermont on Friday, Aug. 26 at 1 p.m. On Saturday, Aug. 27, Vermont will play host, as the Eagles face off against the UMass Minutewomen at 3 p.m. Both of the weekend's contests will take place at the Catamounts' home stadium, Moulton Winder Field.

Boston College Notes
• BC enters 2011 after finishing last season with a 12-7 overall record.
• With 11 letterwinners and five starters returning, the squad welcomes eight newcomers.
• Courtney Tavener and Jacqui Moorfield are the most prominent offensive threats returning for the Eagles in 2011. In 2010, Tavener ranked second on the team in goals (7), tied for second in assists (4) and third in total points (18). Moorfield finished last season with six goals and four assists for 13 points.
• Graduate student Maike de Jager was named to the 2011 Preseason All-ACC Team.
• Sophomore Nicole Schuster and newcomer Emma Plasteras both saw action at the national level this offseason, as Schuster played on the US Under-21 team and Plasteras played on Canada's "A" senior team.
Scouting Vermont
• Vermont will return seven starters in 2011.
• The Catamounts finished the 2010 season with a 5-13 overall record.
• The top returning players for UVM include junior Taylor Silvestro, who registered seven goals in 2010, and seniors Alana Izzo and Mackenzie Williams, who started all 18 games last season and each logged six points.
Scouting UMass
• The Minutewomen finished 15-8 overall in 2010. With an undefeated 7-0 record in conference play, the squad earned the A-10 regular season title.
• In this year's preseason poll, Massachusetts was the favorite among A-10 coaches to win the 2011 conference championship. Under first year head coach Carla Tagliente, the Minutewomen will be looking to win the program's fourth A-10 title in the last five years.
• UMass returns eight starters including junior Thando Zono and sophomore Lindsay Bowman, who registered 13 and nine points, respectively, in 2010.
Series History
• BC leads the all-time series, 8-1, against Vermont. The squads' last meeting was in 2009, when the Eagles earned a 3-0 shutout victory.
• UMass leads the all-time series, 14-7, against BC. The Eagles defeated the Minutewomen, 1-0, in the schools' most recent meeting.
