The Boston College women's soccer team will begin the 2011 campaign on Friday, August 19 at 4 p.m. as the Eagles will host Boston University at the Newton Soccer Field. The Eagles are ranked No. 4 in the 2011 NSCAA preseason poll.
BC returns eight starters on a team that advanced to the College Cup of the 2010 NCAA. BC finished the season third in the 2010 NSCAA Poll, the highest rank the Eagles have ever posted in program history.
In the last five years, Boston College is 3-1-1 in season openers. Last season BC opened versus then No. 1 Stanford. The match ended in a draw, 1-1. The Eagles record while at home in season openers since 1995 is 7-3-1. Since 2005, BC is 4-1-1. The only loss was at Boston University in the 2006 season.
SIMPLY THE BEST
Alison Foley is in her 15th season as the head coach of the Boston College women's soccer program. Foley has led the team to 10 NCAA Tournaments, including eight consecutive appearances. Foley led BC to its first College Cup (Final Four) appearance last season and in 2009 guided the Eagles to the Elite Eight and a share of the ACC Regular Season Championship.
Foley is currently just seven wins away from earning her 200th career victory as a head coach. She is 11 wins away from earning her 200th victory at Boston College. She will be the first women’s soccer coach at BC to earn 200 victories.
ON THE RECORD
Senior goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni is on the verge of setting two program records which are currently owned by Courtney Schaeffer ‘00. A native o f Durham, Conn., Mastroianni had 33 career shutouts and needs just five shutouts to own the program’s shutout record. She had nine shutouts last season and 14 in 2009. Mastroianni is also one win away from owning the all-time victory record. She and Schaeffer have 49 career wins.
SENIOR CLASS
This season Boston College returns six seniors – Jillian Mastroianni, Alyssa Pember, Julia Bouchelle, Alaina Beyar Stephanie Wirth and Marissa Mello. The class has a record of 50-17-5 along with three straight NCAA appearances as well as an Elite Eight, College Cup and a share of the 2009 ACC Regular Season Championship.
BC-BU SERIES
The series between Boston College and Boston University is entering its 16th season. The Eagles lead the head-to-head series, 12-4. The series also includes four NCAA Tournament games in which BC has won each time. Last season the Eagles earned a 1-0 win over BU on September 3. Kristie Mewis scored in the 63rd minute. In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, the Eagles defeated BU, 2-1, in the first round. BU took the lead just 12 minutes into the match, but BC scored two goals in the final 15 minutes of play to advance to the second round of the tournament. Victoria DiMartino tied the match in the 76th minute and Julia Bouchelle scored the game-winner four minutes later.
GRADUATED EAGLES
The Eagles lost six players to graduation – defenders Hannah Cerrone and Chelsea Regan, midfielders Natalie Crutchfield and Amy Caldwell and forwards Jill MacNeil and Brooke Knowlton. The grads left BC having reached four consecutive NCAA Tournament bids, three Rounds of 16, one Elite Eight and a College Cup. The five compiled an overall record of 61-22-9.
CORNER KICKS
Seniors Jillian Mastroianni and Alyssa Pember will serve as the team captains this season ... Junior Kristie Mewis returns from a busy summer. The Hanson, Mass. native trained with the full U.S. Women’s National Team in January in preparation for the 2011 World Cup. Mewis did not make the final roster for the 2011 WWC, but she played with the Under-23 team in one match against Norway’s Under-23 team and two games vs. Sweden’s Under-23 team in Scandanavia. She was in Sweden from June 11-22 … Mewis set a new program record for assists in a single season last season with 14 helpers … Junior Victoria DiMartino enters the 2011 season as the seventh leading scorer in program history. DiMartino needs just nine goals to tie the all-time goal scoring record of 37 held by Morgan Page ’01. She needs 25 points in the next two seasons to pass the all-time record of 94 points held by Sarah Rahko ’03.
